A job listing for Santa Monica Studio suggests that Sony is working on a new God of War game.
God of War and God of War Ragnarok are two of the most popular and beloved first-party PlayStation games. Both are critically acclaimed, with 2018’s God of War having won the Game of the Year awards. God of War: Ragnarok didn’t enjoy those same honors, largely due to the launch of Elden Ring in 2022. But it’s also still considered one of the best PlayStation games of recent years.
It was confirmed previously that Ragnarok would conclude the God of War’s Norse saga. However, Santa Monica Studio released a DLC for Ragnarok, Valhalla, that focused on Kratos dealing with his bloody past. The DLC reignited the hope in fans of a sequel or new God of War game being released in the near future. A recent job listing suggests that a God of War sequel is in development.
Job listings suggest new God of War game is in development
A job listing on Santa Monica Studio’s website suggests the studio is working on a God of War sequel.
The job listing on the official PlayStation website states the studio is looking to hire a senior combat designer who will support hero designs from concept to implementation. While the job listing is standard and lists normal responsibilities, things get interesting in the preferred experience section. The listing says applicants “fluent with the combat design choices, systems, mechanics, and enemies” in the previous two entries in God of War are preferred.
This preference for applicants strongly suggests that Santa Monica Studio is working on another entry in the God of War series. Sony has not confirmed that this listing is for a new God of War game.
While it’s hypothetically possible that the studio is developing an IP with similar gameplay mechanics, this is less likely. Third-person action-adventure games are Sony’s cup of tea, another game fitting that bill wouldn’t be surprising. However, it would be unusual to have Santa Monica Studio work on a similar but unrelated game.
This is a positive development for God of War fans, but nobody should expect anything soon. Sony infamously told investors that it had no major first-party releases planned through its fiscal year ending March 2025. A sequel to Ragnarok would be the biggest first-party game possible. A release in late 2025 is the best case scenario, but even that is unlikely.
