Can you play Destiny on mobile? You can, with Destiny Rising

Destiny Rising is reportedly in development, but what does this mean for playing Destiny on mobile?

Bungie, once best known for the Halo franchise, let go of the iconic sci-fi series after Halo: Reach’s release. Since then, the studio’s focus has almost exclusively been on the Destiny franchise. While few series could ever hope to reach the heights of Halo, Destiny carved out success on its own merits.

The sci-fi shooter has had its ups and downs over the years but consistently boasts an impressive player count. However, Bungie’s reportedly looking for new ways to capitalize on the franchise’s success, and it looks like mobile’s the way to go.

Is Destiny Rising canceled?

Bungie and NetEase are reportedly developing Destiny Rising, letting gamers play the Destiny franchise on mobile devices.

Kurakasis, a notable leaker who accurately reported on another NetEase game, Marvel Rivals, days before its official announcement, claims the Destiny mobile game is still in development. Notably, it is being co-developed with NetEase, a company well-known for its mobile gaming success.

Reports of a Destiny Rising have been floating around for a while.

In 2022, multiple reports of a collaboration between Bungie and NetEase on a mobile first-person shooter for Destiny made the rounds. In early 2024, a job posting at Bungie was searching for an Incubation Technical Art Lead. The role involved working on an upcoming game that would be cross-platform for PC, consoles, and mobile devices.

However, when layoffs hit Bungie later that same year, fans began to worry about the mobile game’s future. Bungie nor NetEase have given an official update on the Destiny mobile game since the 2022 reports.

Destiny Rising currently has no release date.

Can you play Destiny on mobile?

No Destiny games currently exist for mobile devices, and the main titles are only playable on consoles or PC.

While Destiny Rising remains in development, Bungie remains distant from the mobile games space. However, given Destiny’s microtransactions, multiplayer focus, and loot-based gameplay, it’s an easy fit into the mobile world.

However, some fans wonder if Destiny Rising will be a straight port of the Destiny games or a spin-off all on its own. Either way, many fans have expressed interest in a mobile Destiny title, especially with Destiny 2’s narrative DLC more-or-less concluded.
