Control 2 is happening, and it may get big gameplay changes

Remedy Entertainment just teased new information about Control 2 and it’s changing genres away from a Metroidvania shooter.

It’s been a big year for Remedy Entertainment. Though the biggest release has been the Alan Wake 2 DLC, the biggest news has surrounded its upcoming projects. It’s not just the upcoming Max Payne remakes, either.

The company formally announced the first-person extraction shooter FBC: Firebreak in October 2024, a multiplayer spin-off of Control. Interestingly, it’s not the only Control release for 2025. In a November 2024 financial report, Remedy Entertainment released new details about upcoming Control projects.

Is Control 2 still happening?

Remedy Entertainment confirmed Control 2 is still happening, and it will be an action RPG.

Control already featured light RPG elements, but the genre specification imply deeper RPG mechanics for the sequel. These RPG elements would be a refreshing change of pace for fans of Remedy games, which typically focus on spectacle and storytelling over complex mechanics.

While Control was successful among critics, one of the nitpicks players had was the relatively straightforward progression. The game combined third-person gunplay and Metroidvania elements. Players were dropped into the sprawling headquarters of the Federal Bureau of Control, but needed to unlock new powerups and abilities to access new areas.

Despite the fun of telekinesis and other powers, players didn’t have room to stretch their builds creatively. The light RPG elements felt more like a distraction than anything else for some players. Committing to the RPG aspects would mark a big shift in Control 2, at least gameplay-wise.

Beyond that, Remedy has provided few significant details about Control 2. Still, the acknowledgment of the game in its finance report may hint at an upcoming teaser. With The Game Awards over the horizon, there’s no better time for an official Control 2 teaser trailer than the holidays.

A free Control update is coming in 2025

In addition to the sequel details, Remedy announced a free update coming to Control in early 2025.

The update will unlock previously released content, which some players speculate are PlayStation and pre-order exclusives. In particular, non-PlayStation players hope to play the Hideo Kojima cameo mission. The more exciting prospect for most fans is the potential teasers for Control 2. It’s also possible that the update will tie into FBC: Firebreak.

Given Remedy Entertainment’s penchant for cheeky self-references to its own games, the free update could give players a glimpse of what Control 2 will contain.
