GTA 6 is finally available for pre-order, but developer Rockstar Games’ decisions to keep substantial content behind an Ultimate Edition paywall and to move away from physical discs have fans worried about the future of games in general.
Rockstar’s crown jewel franchise’s latest title has seen many setbacks, ranging from delays to postponed release dates, but it’s now finally slated to release on November 19, 2026. But many fans are outraged by Rockstar seemingly removing a physical disc option for the game, as even players who purchase the physical copy will only be given a digital code.
If that’s not enough, significant in-game content is now limited only to the Ultimate Edition. This has started a larger dialogue about whether this is only possible because of GTA 6’s immense popularity, or if this will become the new normal for video games.
Analysts debate whether changes are GTA 6 hype or industry shift
Video games getting multiple editions isn’t a new thing in the industry, as Ultimate and Collector’s Editions are common and they can provide players with bonus content. But GTA 6’s case is unique because Rockstar has locked several in-game stores behind a $20 Ultimate Edition markup.
The Ultimate Edition will receive two vehicle modification shops, a salon, a tattoo parlor, and a unique clothing outlet.

Another thing Rockstar has changed with GTA 6 is that players who choose to purchase the physical box will only get a download code in that box, not an actual physical game disc. This has started a debate as to whether players will actually own the game if it’s tied to their accounts, and if they can lose access if they lose the account.
According to a screenshot going viral, Rockstar Games support has allegedly stated that this may change “during the following months.”
These two developments have generated much outrage among fans who have been waiting for GTA 6 for a long time. Some are wondering whether the entire video game industry will see such changes come to it in the near future.
A single game changing an entire industry seems far-fetched, but GTA is a massive and highly influential franchise, and the moves Rockstar Games makes carry weight. Whether these moves will actually become the standard across the industry may depend entirely on the commercial success of GTA 6.
For what it’s worth, industry analysts have consistently expressed confidence that Grand Theft Auto 6 will see excellent sales even with its lack of a physical disc and the gating of some content behind the title’s premium edition. That’s to say nothing of its $80 price tag, which is also higher than the industry standard.
But something for gamers to keep in mind is that GTA 6 may prove to be an exception even if it becomes a great success despite these moves. Players have been waiting for Rockstar’s crown jewel game for many years, and they may be willing to compromise in order to play this particular game in ways they otherwise wouldn’t.
It isn’t guaranteed that the same consideration would be offered to other video games if this became a broader industry trend. So while Rockstar Games may be pushing into what feels like new territory for video games, it’s very possible, perhaps even probably, that the handling of Grand Theft Auto 6 will remain an industry outlier for some time to come.
