Mega evolutions are the newest type of card coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket that will dramatically affect the competitive scene, and players are already hunting for potential counters.

Since its initial release in October 2024, Pokemon TCG Pocket has brought a number of cards to the mobile game for players to collect and compete with. These have included ex cards, shiny cards, and now mega ex cards. Mega evolutions were first introduced in Generation 5 and are making a comeback with both Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Pokemon TCG Pocket. They may not be invincible, but a mega ex is usually a powerful opponent.

Here are the known Pokemon TCG Pocket mega evolutions so far and the cards players should stock up on to counter them.

Mega evolutions coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket

Pokemon TCG Pocket announced the impending arrival of Mega Evolution ex cards to the game with new teaser cards.

The mega evolution trailer has introduced three new cards players can look forward to: Mega Altaria, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Blaziken. Each has its own pros and cons as well as ways to fit into a desired deck:

  • Mega Altaria (psychic): 190 HP, deals 40 damage + 30 more for each benched Pokemon
  • Mega Gyarados (water): 210 HP, deals 140 damage and makes an opponent discard the top three cards of their deck
  • Mega Blaziken (fire): 210 HP, deals 120 damage and burns the opposing Pokemon

More cards are likely to be announced as the release date for the set draws closer. Other Pokemon who can mega evolve and may appear in Pokemon TCG Pocket include Tyrannitar, Charizard, and the newly revealed Dragonite.

Despite their immense power, mega evolutions do have one major drawback: knocking out just one can win the entire battle. Most ex cards count for two points in a three\- point battle, but mega ex cards will count for a full three points. They may end up becoming major parts of high-risk, high-reward strategies in competitive play.

While no definite date was given, players can look forward to seeing mega evolutions in Pokemon TCG Pocket sometime in the fall of 2025. This gives a little time yet to build decks that may stand a chance against these extremely powerful new cards.

Early counters to mega evolutions

Players looking to counter Mega Evolutions in Pokemon TCG Pocket may want to loop back to cards from previous sets in search of cards that are specifically good versus Ex cards.

Pokemon TCG Pocket already has a number of cards designed to counter ex cards, making them excellent against mega ex Pokemon. One notable card is the electric-type Oricorio from Celestial Guardians. The Pokemon takes zero damage from ex cards while it can dish out a respectable 50 damage. When facing mega ex cards, Oricorio is a powerful tool.

Oriocorio, Tauros, and Sudowoodo are some of the best counters right now for Mega Evolutions.

Two other important cards for an anti-mega deck so far are Sudowoodo from Triumphant Light and Tauros from Mythical Island. Sudowoodo deals at least 50 damage to ex cards for just one energy, and Tauros can deal 120 damage against an ex card.

Importantly, each of these three cards awards the opponent with just a single point when they are defeated, meaning a player wielding a Mega Evolution ex card would have to beat these cards out three times before losing their one super-strong Pokemon.

The best way to pull cards to counter mega evolutions is to spend hourglasses and save up pack points in order to open more packs. With their arrival just around the corner, Mega Evolutions are sure to shake up the Pokemon TCG Pocket meta in new and exciting ways.
