Though Arcane primarily focused on the class war between Piltover and Zaun, Ambessa’s ambition raised tensions with her Noxian philosophy. Noxus is never seen, yet its tendrils have reached across Runeterra with strong steel and dark magics.
Many fans may have left the series finale confused about what Noxus is. Characters allude to its brutal setting and expansionist rule, but only Ambessa’s army and the Black Rose appear. There are far more players in Noxus than Arcane fans see, and with the upcoming shows, it’s good to get familiar with the region’s lore.
What is Noxus in League of Legends?
In League of Legends lore, Noxus is a powerful expansionist empire with ambitions of conquering Runeterra.
Noxus is essentially a fantasy version of Rome, with more rights given to assimilated cultures. The nation prides itself as a meritocracy, where the strong can rise through the ranks regardless of class or race. However, this is a veneer for a nightmarish nation where the strong consume the weak.
Although Noxus has many powerful figures, the top of the hierarchy is Jericho Swain, the Grand General battle mage of the nation. With his demonic magic, ruthless attitude, and deep cunning, Swain has all but conquered Noxus as its venerated leader. Swain aims to unite Runeterra under one banner so it can face any threats with strength and discipline, particularly dark forces from different planes.
Even so, factions like the Black Rose still have schemes to overthrow Swain from the shadows. Although united on its face, Noxus is an intricate web of merciless politics. Those who play the game of thrones in Noxus win or die. There is no quarter for weakness.
Which champion will show up in the Noxus Arcane spinoff?
Arcane teased Swain and LeBlanc as crucial characters in the upcoming Noxus Arcane spinoff. The Black Rose storyline in Season 2 directly ties to LeBlanc, as she’s the defacto leader of the faction. Arcane Season 2, Episode 9 also features a three-eyed raven spying on Piltover. The raven happens to be the iconic bird associated with Swain himself.
With Piltover-Zaun in an uneasy peace, Mel Medarda may become the new protagonist of the next show as she travels to Noxus to uncover more about her mysterious past. The cruelty and hardships of Noxus will make or break the councilwoman-turned-mage.
