A new Ghost Recon game is reportedly in the works, with details on its theme and release window also being discussed.
The last Ghost Recon game was Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint, which was released in 2019. Since then, although the game has gotten updates and has a dedicated fanbase, fans can’t help but wonder when Ubisoft will announce the next entry in the series. According to reports, fans won’t actually have to wait that long.
Although details are scarce, there are enough details included to give fans an idea of Ubisoft’s plans for the Ghost Recon series. The new shooter is said to be looking to lure in new fans with a gameplay overhaul inspired by some of the biggest names in the genre.
Will there be a new Ghost Recon game?
Ubisoft is apparently working on a new Ghost Recon game titled Ghost Recon: Project OVR, pronounced “over.”
While recent entries in the Ghost Recon series have explored the third-person perspective, the upcoming game will reportedly take the series back to its roots with a first-person perspective. These details were reported by Insider Gaming. The upcoming Ghost Recon game is said to be a “squad-based military tactical shooter” that will take inspiration from several popular IPs like Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series and VOID Interactive’s Ready or Not.
The previous entry in the Ghost Recon series, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, was also set in a fictional island chain in the Pacific Ocean called Auroa. The new Ghost Recon game is said to do the same, with players needing to blast their way through a war-torn fictional country. The move to a fictional location comes after the Bolivian government filed a formal complaint over how it was portrayed as a “narco-state” run by drug cartels in Ghost Recon Wildlands.
The game is also reportedly going to portray some weighty subject material. One example given is a mission that has the player’s squad almost shoot a man holding a baby, who they mistake for a bomb.
When will the next Ghost Recon game come out?
Ghost Recon: Project Over is reportedly set to be released in 2025 or 2026, suggesting the game might get an official announcement near the end of 2024.
It’s unknown which platforms Project Over will come out on, but the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC will likely get versions at launch. The report states that the game received a major graphical overhaul, which may preclude it from a PS4 or Xbox One release.
The canceled free-to-play battle royale Ghost Recon Frontline was to be released for last-gen consoles. However, with a minimum three-year gap between that and the estimated release date for Project Over, Ubisoft will likely amp up the fidelity and specification requirements of the Ghost Recon series.
