Ratings board approves Silent Hill 2 remake, is release date soon?

The Silent Hill 2 remake has received a rating from a game rating agency in Korea, suggesting its release date announcement may be around the corner.

Silent Hill 2’s remake was first announced in 2022 and while there have been indications that development is effectively done, neither publisher Konami nor developer Bloober Team has revealed an official release date for the game. The only instance of actual news related to the game’s release date was when Sony included Silent Hill 2 in its sizzle reel of exclusives coming in 2024, an event that led to public frustration within Bloober Team.

While the game is still officially in limbo, the remake received a rating from South Korea’s leaky game ratings board, the GRAC. This hints that the release date might be on the horizon, which aligns with previous leaks and announcements made in the past.

What does the rating mean for Silent Hill 2 remake release date?

A Korean game rating agency gave the Silent Hill 2 remake a rating, indicating its release could be near. The rating’s date of application was February 16, 2024, while the deliberation date was February 29.

Getting games rated is a major step in its release, as an unrated game cannot be sold at retail in most major markets. Game ratings boards have also been a steady source of leaks, particularly when it comes to unannounced games. This was recently seen when the same board in Korea leaked Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance, only for it to get an official reveal some days later.

A March release date aligns with a different leak from PCGameBenchmark database entry that came out alongside the Silent Hill 2 remake’s specs. Since the game has gotten a rating, it’s likely either complete or very close to completion.

A rating coming through does not inherently indicate an imminent release, as seen with Shin Megami Tensei 5 Vengeance which won’t drop until June. But given how Silent Hill: The Short Message received a stealth launch, it’s not out of the question that the game could come out sooner rather than later.

The Silent Hill 2 remake is confirmed to be coming out for PlayStation 5 and PC. The game is available to wishlist on Steam and some major retailers have it up for pre-order.

Silent Hill 2 won’t be released for the PS5 and PC simultaneously, though. Instead, the game will get an initial PS5 release, and whatever ports Konami decides to develop will come out later since the Silent Hill 2 remake has a 12-month console exclusivity window on PS5.
