Baldur’s Gate 3 will seemingly be adding Honour Mode and if so, it will be absolutely brutal for players.
Larian Studios’ most recent title, Baldur’s Gate 3, came out earlier this year to great acclaim from fans and critics alike. This saw a major uptick in the popularity of similar games, with new titles like Pillars of Eternity 3 being teased and established favorites like Divinity: Original Sin getting a second wind. However, it looks like Larian isn’t done with the game just yet as a new achievement on GOG spoiled what to expect for the next patch.
While there hasn’t been an official announcement from Larian Studios, it’s safe to assume that those players who have been looking for more of a challenge from Baldur’s Gate 3 are about to get exactly what they wished for. This comes from a new difficulty mode that will make it much harder to see major questlines through.
What is Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3?
Honour Mode is a game mode that prevents save scumming and adds permadeath.
The achievement titled “Foehammer” asks players to beat the main story in a mode that cannot be selected by users. This is likely Larian gearing up to release a new difficulty option for the game.
Honour Mode is unselectable at the moment. However, the mode will likely be similar, if not the same as the Honor Mode in Larian’s previous claim, Divinity: Original Sin 2.
In DOS2, Honor Mode only allowed a single save file that autosaved constantly. If this feature is added to Baldur’s Gate 3 then players won’t be able to save scum and will have to stick to whatever choices they make. Also, if any character in a party dies then the death will be permanent thanks to the autosave feature. Worse, if a player’s entire party is wiped out then the game will automatically delete that save file, forcing that player to start from scratch.
Baldur’s Gate 3 has a much longer campaign than Divinity so there’s a chance that Larian might give players some breathing room. If it’s pulled directly from DOS2 however, fans are in for a uniquely brutal experience.
When will Baldur’s Gate 3 get the Honour Mode?
Larian has not given any announcement on when Baldur’s Gate 3 will get the Honour Mode, but it could be coming soon.
The achievement being added to GOG could imply an imminent release. A leaker claimed to have the release date of Baldur’s Gate 3’s on Xbox Series X/S in the near future, and a sizable new content update could coincide with its launch.
