Ubisoft’s long-running series has had its ups and downs but is now seeing a revival with Assassin’s Creed Mirage. Fans of the old-school Assassin’s Creed games have been torn about the RPG elements of the latest releases but Ubisoft is returning to its roots with the newest game and is bringing stealth into the limelight. There won’t be RPG elements in Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Assassin’s Creed Codename Red seems to be the next evolution of the formula that started with Origins.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is potentially set to be a massive game, with Ubisoft reportedly moving its release date and canceling other titles in order to dedicate greater development resources to it. This could make it the long-awaited return to the top for the series, which is still recovering from a skid of games that received middling fan and critical reception.
What is Assassin’s Creed Codename Red?
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is an upcoming Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan. The game has been the subject of multiple rumors and reports, with some specifically coming from Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming.
The game was officially revealed with a single 30-second reveal trailer during the Ubisoft Forward showcase in 2022. After that, there was no official information announced by the company as it focused on Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
The trailer confirmed that the game will take place in Japan, a setting fans have been waiting for from the series. It shows a shadowy figure, presumably the lead character, perching on top of a building with a sword and the signature hidden blade of the Assassin Brotherhood. Nothing else has been officially confirmed about the game by Ubisoft, but leaks and reports have offered plenty of news.
Players can reportedly play as a samurai or a ninja. It is unclear whether the player’s character selection is locked for the entire game, as seen with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Valhalla. It’s hypothetically possible that the game could introduce on-the-fly character swapping similar to the upcoming Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, though there is no confirmation of this feature.
Leaks also suggest that the game will have a larger focus on stealth-based gameplay. Fans will likely see more information regarding the title after Assassin’s Creed Mirage launches in October 2023.
Assassin’s Creed Codename Red release date
According to reports, Assassin’s Creed Codename Red is already playable and could be released in Autumn 2024. Recent Assassin’s Creed games have been released in either October or November.
Reports also state a larger reveal for the game may come as soon as early 2024, with marketing ramping up from there. None of this is confirmed, as Ubisoft hasn’t yet released any information about Assassin’s Creed Codename Red or its release date beyond the reveal trailer.
