Treyarch has finally nerfed the overpowered Recon combat specialty, following numerous player complaints. Here’s how it works after the recent update.
Black Ops 6 has the classic perk system with the new addition of combat specialties. These are bonus perks that unlock upon equipping perks from the same class or color category. Compared with regular perks, all specialties are slightly more powerful, but Recon is in its own league. This stealth-enhancing specialty functioned almost like a wallhack, sparking numerous player complaints.
Now, in Black Ops 6’s first major update post-release, Treyarch has shipped a nerf for Recon. But will it be enough to actually make a difference?
Recon nerfed in Black Ops 6, but fans are still unhappy
Treyarch removed the wallhack-like ability upon spawn offered by Recon, but it remains extremely powerful.
Previously, players with the Recon specialty gained an X-ray-like view of enemies immediately upon spawning into the map for two seconds. In multiplayer modes with constant respawns, this specialty essentially functioned as a wallhack. For instance, in Kill Order, where players respawn right after dying, Recon users could pinpoint enemy locations instantly. Those who have learned a wall bang or two could bag easy kills without even moving.
While Enforcer remained the number one combat specialty in Black Ops 6, Recon quickly became popular among new players looking to cut corners.
After many complaints, Treyarch has nerfed the duration of Recon’s effect. Instead of two seconds, Recon vision will now last for 1.5 seconds. That means the wallhack is still in the game, but players have 25% less time to identify enemy locations.
The fan response to the nerf has been lukewarm, with some calling Treyarch to remove the specialty completely. According to the fans, Recon doesn’t belong in Black Ops 6 and will be extremely powerful when ranked starts in November.
Thankfully, Treyarch has confirmed that more nerfs to Recon are coming soon. According to the developer, the specialty’s duration will be reduced further in the coming weeks to prepare for Season 1. That has ignited some hope among players looking for fair play in Black Ops 6.
However, given its exploitative nature, only time will tell if Recon will ever become a less controversial specialty in the game. Wallhacking is a powerful type of hack for a reason, after all.
