Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 are in development, with the news coming from an official source in an unofficial capacity.
The most recent addition to the Borderlands lineup was Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, which debuted in 2022. The game maintained the trademark humor and frenetic gunplay associated with the series, but amped up the Dungeons and Dragons influences and immersed players in a high fantasy setting. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands received positive reviews and exceeded sales expectations, according to Take-Two Interactive. The latest mainline series entry, Borderlands 3, has also been a strong seller, moving over 18 million copies.
Despite the current uncertainty surrounding Gearbox Software, the Borderlands IP continues to thrive. It seemed inevitable that the company would invest in another mainline entry and further explore the improvised fantastical setting introduced in the Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands spinoff. And a recent leak seems to be in line with this expectation.
Will there be a Borderlands 4 or Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2?
The Borderlands series will continue, with Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2 both in development according to social media posts by developers from the Borderlands series.
A recent LinkedIn post by a game developer lists themselves as the technical director. Randel Reiss is a veteran game developer and a former technical director for Lost Boys Interactive, a studio that helped develop Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. On his LinkedIn page, Reiss states that he worked on Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderland 2, two games that have not yet been officially revealed.
Considering that Tiny Tina’s Wonderland took a decade to develop, fans were expecting a long wait for its sequel or for the game to be a one-off release. Borderlands 4 was also teased similarly once before. Another tweet from company founder Randy Pitchford also teased that development on the next big Borderlands game would begin or continue in 2021, further adding some weight to Reiss’ profile leak.
Borderlands 3 began development in 2015 and was released in 2019. Reiss stated that work on Borderlands 4 was in progress in 2021.
This means that it is possible that Borderlands 4 could come out in 2025 or 2026. With Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands enjoying strong commercial success, Gearbox could also push for a quick turnaround on a sequel. There’s no official release window, however, as the game is not yet officially confirmed by 2K Games or Gearbox.
