Metaphor: ReFantazio went above and beyond Atlus’ wildest expectations and that’s without a Nintendo Switch version. Is there any chance that changes, though?
Atlus has arguably hit its highest status as a studio in 2024. Persona 3 Reload earlier in the year shattered previous sales records, selling 1 million units in under a week. In October 2024, Metaphor: ReFantazio took it a few steps further by selling a million units in under 24 hours.
The runaway success of Atlus’ latest IP proves it can succeed even with originals. Most impressively, Metaphor: ReFantazio reached these numbers without a comprehensive platform release. Fans patiently await news on a potential Nintendo Switch release.
Is Metaphor: ReFantazio coming to the Nintendo Switch?
Atlus has not announced any plans for a Nintendo Switch release of Metaphor: ReFantazio.
Sega and Atlus have prioritized a multi-platform strategy over the last few years. While games like Persona 5 were long PlayStation-exclusive, recent releases like Unicorn Overlord, Persona 5 Tactica, and Persona 3 Reload have been released across multiple consoles. But of those, only Persona 5 Tactica was released on PC alongside Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo consoles.
In interviews, Persona 3 Reload director Takuya Yamaguchi and producer Ryota Niitsuma stated that the idea of releasing the game on Nintendo Switch was decided against early on in development. Now long removed from its initial release, there’s still no word on a Nintendo Switch port of Persona 3 Reload.
Nintendo fans have cause for hope, though.
Atlus leaker Midori, who leaked accurate information on multiple Atlus releases including Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 3 Reload, stated a Switch 2 release will happen for Metaphor: ReFantazio. A Switch port remains likely, given the studio’s relationship with Nintendo, but it likely won’t be for the existing Switch.
Atlus’ history with the Nintendo Switch makes the future bright
Since Shin Megami Tensei V, Atlus has expressed a great interest in developing games on Nintendo platforms.
Atlus specifically chose to develop Shin Megami Tensei V for the Nintendo Switch upon its initial launch in November 2021. It took nearly three years before the game finally moved to other platforms.
Development on the Switch slowed down Shin Megami Tensei V’s release. Atlus still included a native Switch release for one of its other major releases of 2024; Unicorn Overlord. With Switch development experience under its belt, fans hope the Metaphor: ReFantazio Switch port isn’t far behind.
