Details arrive on Dragon Age: The Veilguard nudity, NPC romance

Dragon Age Veilguard companion

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is taking a page from Baldur’s Gate 3’s playbook while still doing something original when it comes to NPC romance and nudity.

Each entry in the Dragon Age series fundamentally changes mechanics, combat, and presentation. Dragon Age: The Veilguard continues that trend with stylized graphics, faster combat, and a fresh hell awaiting players. Another area that’s getting a major overhaul is romance plots.

Romance in games has certainly come a long way. Video games have evolved from the early days of romance in Phantasy Star 3 to the deeper, dynamic relationships in Baldur’s Gate 3. Romance in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is also bringing significant changes.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will have nudity, but only partially

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will feature partial nudity in the character creation mode and in other parts of the game.

In past games, the character creator had no nudity at all. This time around, the protagonist Rook will be completely unclothed while players design them. This allows players to adjust everything about their player character in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, something that has been seen in Cyberpunk 2077 and Baldur’s Gate 3. Well, almost everything. Unlike Cyberpunk and Baldur’s Gate 3, only topless nudity is shown in the character creator.

Talking to Game Informer, game director Corrine Busche said Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a “mature RPG.” Precedent shows that’s true, as Dragon Age: Inquisition featured nudity in some of its romance scenes. That’s likely to continue into The Veilguard as well.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard party members will have romance arcs without the player

Party members can romance each other in the Dragon Age: The Veilguard, making the player effectively a third wheel.

Each companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is pansexual, meaning there are no restrictions on who the player can romance. Dragon Age: Inquisition had romance gated behind specific race and gender requirements. For example, Cullen could only be romanced if the player was a female human or female elf but wasn’t an option for human men or female Qunari.

Taking cues from Baldur’s Gate 3, each romance will be different in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Some companions will be direct in their approach, while others may take some courting to convince. But if the player doesn’t make a move first, Dragon Age: The Veilguard NPCs will romance each other. However, this isn’t a first for Bioware, or Dragon Age specifically. In Inquisition, Iron Bull and Dorian can get together if the player romantically ignores them. Meanwhile, Mass Effect 3 revealed a slow-simmering romance between Tali and Garrus.
