Does Baldur’s Gate 3 have crossplay? What Larian has planned

With Baldur’s Gate 3 well past its first birthday, fans are wondering about when crossplay might arrive for it.

2023 saw many unexpected hits. Baldur’s Gate 3’s success wasn’t exactly a surprise, but nobody could have predicted it would be as big as it was. The Baldur’s Gate franchise has always been beloved, but the third entry reached audiences who’ve never even touched the series. With over 10 million units sold, it’s the most successful game in Larian’s library by a significant margin.

Adding to the game’s mass appeal was its release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox, rather than primarily catering to PC players. The game even supports cross-saves between PC and consoles, provided the player hasn’t added tons of Baldur’s Gate 3 mods to deal with. Still, crossplay remains one of the most desired features of the game.

Will Baldur’s Gate 3 have PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox crossplay?

Larian Studios will add crossplay to Baldur’s Gate 3 in a future update. After Patch 7’s release on all platforms, Larian Studios updated fans on crossplay between consoles and PC.

“We are still working on bringing crossplay to Baldur’s Gate 3, and like Patch 7, this requires a lot of work and testing before we’re prepared to release it into the wild,” stated the developers in the official blog post. 

With mods, different systems, and several technical factors to worry about, it’s understandable that Larian is taking its time. After all, Baldur’s Gate 3 remained in early access for years before its official release. It’s also a first for Larian, given how the studio didn’t support console crossplay for previous titles, particularly Divinity.

The addition of crossplay will reportedly come alongside a photo mode. This is a seemingly minor yet long-awaited feature for fans. Larian also states that these will be the final major updates for Baldur’s Gate 3 before the studio’s next project.

Fascinatingly, Baldur’s Gate 3 multiplayer can still run with mods. With Larian Studios adding mod support post-Patch 7, creators find it easier than ever to make mods work across different PCs. Players believe the same will prove true for Baldur’s Gate 3 on consoles in future patches. 

Although DLC and sequel plans will no longer happen, fans can rest assured that the studio hasn’t abandoned Faerun just yet.
