Patch 7 has landed on all of Baldur’s Gate 3’s platforms, meaning console gamers can now customize their BG3 experience on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S using mods.
Fans expressed disappointment when Larian Studios announced it would let another developer handle Baldur’s Gate 4. After all, Larian Studios pushed the iconic but niche franchise to mainstream success with its fantastic adaptation of the Dungeons and Dragons setting. Though Larian was well-established before touching Baldur’s Gate, the studio is now essentially synonymous with it.
However, that doesn’t mean Larian Studios will abandon Baldur’s Gate 3. Although no major DLC is in development, the developers promised updates and patches filled with new content. Patch 7 notably contains new endings, gameplay changes, and official mod support. Now, players can install some of the best BG3 mods on consoles.
How to download and install Baldur’s Gate 3 mods on console
Players can browse through the in-game mod manager for Baldur’s Gate 3 to download mods and install them.
Unlike PC players who typically use third-party mod managers like Vortex or Mod Manager 2, those on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S must use the in-game Mod Manager for Baldur’s Gate 3 mods. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to download and install BG3 mods:
- Open Mod Manager in Baldur’s Gate 3 main menu
- Search for the desired mod on the “Browse” tab
- Use filters to separate by category
- Select the mod and carefully read the descriptions; note that some mods may need additional steps or requirements
- Click Download
- Go to the Installed tab and enable the mod
Just like that, console players can now enjoy dozens of BG3 mods. However, there’s a caveat.
Unlike PC, which has sites like the Nexus to compile thousands of mods, Larian handles the approval of mods on consoles. At launch, there were only 69 mods approved for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S consoles. Larian Studios plans to greenlight more mods and fan support is strong enough that players can expect some transformative options.
What mods are available for consoles in Baldur’s Gate 3?
There are numerous mods in Baldur’s Gate 3 that make the game easier, and add new races and classes to the game.
With more coming soon, console players can try a lot of mods regardless. Though nothing too ambitious will make it in, many fans hope subclass mods get approved in future updates. In the meantime, here are some of the best BG3 mods on console to grab:
- Adjustable Party Limit
- ImpUI
- Mystic Class
- DoubleXP
- Carry_Weight_Extra
- Bag of Holding
- Kuo-Toa Playable Race
These mods are straightforward in terms of what they offer, with some of them offering a transformative experience. There are already ambitious mods, but there are limitations.
Larian has stricter guidelines about which mods can make it to consoles. While Baldur’s Gate 3 on PC has a mod for everything, the leash will be much shorter on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. If a mod falls under the categories below, it will not make the console cut.
- Shader mods
- Explicit sex mods
- Excessively violent mods
- Mods that interfere with bootup
- Mods that crash the game
- Mods that require unsupported file types
Baldur’s Gate 3’s story may be over, but its modding scene has just begun. If it’s anything like Skyrim, the scene will thrive for years.
