Does From Software’s letter of intent guarantee Sony sale?

ELDEN RING™_20240610225036

It’s been confirmed that Sony is planning to acquire Kadokawa, the parent company of From Software, according to a letter of intent.

From Software has been on many people’s radar after the release of Elden Ring, and Sony is apparently one of those people. Following unofficial reports and rumors about Sony acquiring Kadokawa, the Japanese media company has now released a letter of intent that confirms Sony is interested in acquiring it. In a similar move, Microsoft acquired Activision in the fall of 2023 for $68.7 billion, leading the gaming community to worry that Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Activision’s other titles would be Xbox exclusives.

Will Sony soon be doing the same thing with From Software?

Sony confirmed interested in buying From Software

Kadokawa has shared a short statement that confirms the rumor that Sony is interested in acquiring From Software and its other development studios. The short letter of intent states that Sony has reached out to Kadokawa, interested in acquiring the company’s shares. However, no decision has been made at this time. The letter concludes that Kadokawa will make a public announcement if there are any further actions regarding this acquisition in the future.

A letter of intent is a document that overviews an agreement between parties with the goal of entering a formal and legally binding contract in the future. However, the letter of intent is not yet binding. Still, gamers can’t help but wonder if Sony and Kadokawa will reach an agreement.

Kadokawa owns a majority stake in From Software but also Spike Chunsoft, the developer behind Danganronpa, and Acquire, the Octopath Traveller developer. Kadokawa also owns various anime, manga, and film production companies. While it seems like it’d be an interesting move for Sony, it should also be noted that the company’s recent acquisitions left a sour taste in the gaming community’s mouth. When Sony acquired Destiny 2 developer Bungie a few years ago, the company laid off hundreds of people and canceled anticipated projects. Then there was Concord, the PS5 exclusive that failed after Sony acquired Firewalk Studios.

Hopefully Sony acquiring Kadokawa doesn’t result in anything terrible happening to Elden Ring 2.
