New Witcher spinoff confirmed, and we know the release date

Witcher 3 Geralt

It’s been confirmed that a Witcher spinoff game is in the works, but if its not The Witcher 4, what is it?

The Witcher 3 came out in 2015 and has been a massive hit. So much so that fans have been anxiously awaiting a fourth Witcher game for years despite no real news from CD Projekt Red. With the success of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it seemed like it only made sense to release another. CDPR turned its attention to Cyberpunk 2077, however, leaving gamers to wonder if The Witcher 4 would ever happen.

Now a new Witcher game is finally happening, but it’s not exactly what gamers had in mind.

New Witcher game has been announced but it’s a spinoff

On November 27, game director Sebastian Kalemba stated on X that he was “thrilled” to announce that Witcher spinoff Project Polaris has entered the “full-scale production phase.”

“With new challenges just around the corner, it’s the talented and hard-working people who make me believe we can together make the upcoming Witcher Saga a remarkable experience. No stopping now! Stay tuned for what’s on the other side of the coin!”said Kalemba.

Project Polaris has been the codename for the Witcher game that CDPR has been working on. For a few years now, fans have been calling it The Witcher 4, but global PR director Radek Grabowski shut down the existence of Witcher 4 right when it was first announced in 2022. Instead, Project Polaris will be a Witcher spinoff but the characters, plot, and other gameplay elements are not yet known.

What’s the release date of Project Polaris?

Based on CD Projekt Red investor calls, Witcher spinoff Project Polaris has an intended release date year of 2025.

CD Projekt Red first announced Project Polaris back in 2022 during an investor call. CEO Adam Kicinski said that the Witcher-themed game was three years from release at the time of its reveal. Going by this, Project Polaris is set to come out in 2025. This hasn’t been confirmed by CDPR any time recently and it’s unclear if the timeline has changed since the announcement.

Cyberpunk 2077 is also getting a sequel, but the date has not been discussed by CD Projekt Red at all just yet. For now, Project Polaris is much closer to becoming a reality, although it’s unclear what this reality will be.
