Dragon Age: The Veilguard surprises fans by letting them recreate their Inquisitor from Dragon Age: Inquisition but does the previous character’s race, or anything else, matter?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited return to BioWare’s Dragon Age series. While the series ended on a high note with the 2014 Game of the Year winner Dragon Age: Inquisition, things haven’t been all that good with the studio since. After games like Anthem and Mass Effect: Andromeda, expectations were mixed for Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
While Dragon Age: The Veilguard takes players to a new time and world, some things may seem familiar. In addition to familiar races, the game has a very familiar character in the form of the previous game’s Inquisitor. While Dragon Age: The Veilguard lets players freely design the Inquisitor, fans wonder if their race, gender, or other factors matters in the long run.
Does it matter what race you give the Inquisitor in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The Inquisitor only appears in cutscenes so their race, gender, and overall appearance doesn’t matter in the story or gameplay.
Dragon Age: Inquisition is regarded as a strong entry in the series, so news that the game’s protagonist would have a part in The Veilguard understandably excited fans. However, the Inquisitor isn’t a playable character or party member. On the contrary, they only appear in a cutscene, even though the Dragon Age: Inquisition party and story are referenced multiple times.
Those who played the previous entry in the series and want to keep things authentic will likely want to give the Inquisitor roughly the same appearance as Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, as the former protagonist has no active role in the game, letting players customize the Inquisitor is purely for immersion purposes.
What happened to the Inquisition in The Veilguard?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard reveals that most of the Inquisition was disbanded years after the Breach, though a smaller group still answers to the Chantry.
While players have the ability to customize the Inquisitor’s race, gender, and appearance for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, they’re one of the few characters that actually pops up. Most of the Inquisition is only referenced in conversations with NPCs. Players do know what happens to each of them, though.
According to Harding, the Inquisition is now a smaller force that works underground to keep an eye on things. However, she also goes through some key members of the Inquisition players will likely be familiar with.
Of the three advisors, Harding states Josephine is her favorite and seems to be doing well. Cullen apparently had lyrium withdrawals, while Leliana has found a new hobby breeding nugs, a callback to one of the gifts the player could give her in Dragon Age: Inquisition.
Blackwall now goes by his family name Rainier. While he usually sticks to himself, he seems to be close to the elven rogue Sera. According to what Harding says, Cole is still a spirit and never made peace with his human past, something many Inquisition players changed in their playthroughs.
Dorian Pavus spent the time between games pushing for progressive policies in the Magisterium. However, thanks to an incident involving the resistance known as the Shadow Dragons, he acts as Maevaris Tilani’s eyes and ears in the Magisterium.
