One of the earliest choices in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is whether to take Neve or Harding to stop Solas’ ritual, but what are the consequences of both choices?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard may have been part of various controversies, but that hasn’t stopped it from following the usual BioWare formula. With multiple choices the player must make throughout the game, every play-through has the potential to be vastly different from one another.
The earliest choice the player gets is whether to stop or support Varric’s plan to reason with Solas. Directly after that, players can take Neve or Harding to stop Solas’ ritual. However, players will want to know the consequences of both decisions to determine which one is better.
Can you stop Varric from speaking with Solas?
Regardless of the player’s dialogue option, Varric will still decide to go through with his plan to reason with Solas.
Varric and Solas go way back, as the prologue establishes. Rook and their party believes the plan is to attack Solas while he’s performing the ritual, but Varric has something else in mind. The Dwarven hero voices his plan to reason with Solas and try to get him to stop his ritual. Here, the player is given the first choice in the game. Challenge or support Varric’s plan.
However, the player’s decision is irrelevant as Varric will always try to reason with Solas. This means Solas always stabs Varric with the Lyrium knife and breaks his trusty Bianca. This plot point is integral to the main story and comes into play later.
Should you choose Neve or Harding in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
The story consequences of choosing Neve or Harding are minor but the chosen companion will like Rook more.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard, like other games in the series, lets players choose which NPCs they want their character to get close to. This adds a sense of subjectivity to the equation, as different players prefer different characters.
The main reward for choosing between Neve and Harding is a boost in Rook’s relationship with that NPC. While this decision won’t lock out any potential romance options, it’ll help the player cozy up to them early on.
The chosen character is caught in the aftermath of the ritual’s explosion. This leads to that character sporting some nasty bruises and injuries. Thanks to this, the player can’t take the chosen character to look for Bellara in the following Dragon Age: The Veilguard mission. However, the absence is only temporary as the player will have a full party after the mission’s completion.
