Former CD Projekt Red developers have united as Rebel Wolves to create Dawnwalker: Origins, a game they’re hoping to make even better than The Witcher 4.
With CD Projekt Red having all hands on deck for the upcoming The Witcher 4, former developers from the studio are also gearing up for their own game of that nature. Rebel Wolves is a studio composed primarily of veteran CD Projekt Red developers who worked on The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. It was formed in February 2022 by Witcher 3 game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, as he and many talents from CD Projekt Red wanted the freedom to create the games they wanted.
Although the studio’s development of an original fantasy game was known as early as February 2022, more concrete details have recently surfaced. If done properly, this could give fans of The Witcher something to chew on during what could be a lengthy wait for the next game in the series.
What is the first game of Rebel Wolves?
Dawnwalker: Origins will be the first game from Rebel Wolves. The game is set to be similar to The Witcher series. Domains for Dawnwalker: Origins were found online.
Dawnwalker: Origins will be a single-player, offline RPG and is intended to be the studio’s landmark franchise. Though Rebel Wolves has been mostly quiet, details regarding the game have leaked out through job listings.
Although it won’t be quite as huge as The Witcher 3 in map size, it plans to make up for it by having even more quests. The game is estimated to be around the same size as The Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine expansion and is being developed in Unreal Engine 5. Rebel Wolves received investments from Chinese tech conglomerate NetEase and reportedly had over 100 people working on the game in 2023.
Is Dawnwalker: Origins related to The Witcher?
Dawnwalker: Origins will be unrelated to The Witcher.
The title is set to take place entirely within its own, separate universe. The video game rights to The Witcher franchise are firmly under CD Projekt Red’s wing, it’s unlikely Rebel Wolves could have made a The Witcher game anyway.
Given the prevalence of bats in revealed concept art, as well as the character’s sharpened teeth, Dawnwalker: Origins likely delves into vampire mythos. As for whether the player will be a vampire, a vampire slayer, or perhaps both like Marvel’s Blade, is currently unknown. The scale of the game’s development suggests it will be a major release once it comes out regardless.
