New Donkey Kong and F-Zero games may be in the pipeline according to a notable Nintendo leaker, but will they be for the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2?
A leaker with a history of scooping Nintendo on announcements of new games posted a pair of tweets hinting at the resurrection of two dormant franchises. While there are many self-proclaimed leakers out there, Pyoro accurately spoiled the official reveals of the Super Mario RPG Remake and even Mario Wonder well before the official announcements.
The Donkey Kong franchise has hibernating for nearly a decade. The last full release was Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for the Nintendo Wii U, way back in 2014. A Nintendo Switch port of the game was released in 2018. Although he did show up in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, that’s small comfort for fans of the iconic gorilla.
F-Zero’s slumber has been even longer, with its last title coming all the way back to 2004 with F-Zero Climax for the Game Boy Advance. Since then, Captain Falcon has been spending more time in Smash Bros than he has in his own franchise. Of course, that may all soon change after a leaker teased the announcement of new entries in the slumbering franchises.
When will the new F-Zero and Donkey Kong games get announced?
The new Donkey Kong and F-Zero games may get revealed at an upcoming Nintendo Direct event.
A separate report claims that Nintendo will be hosting a Nintendo Direct on the week of September 11. Donkey Kong and F-Zero may be among the announcements for that show. Titles such as an untitled Princess Peach game, Detective Pikachu Returns, Super Mario RPG Remake, and Metroid Prime 4 are also expected to appear, especially as two of those titles are coming out very soon.
That said, there is also the looming news regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. A prototype of the next-gen Nintendo console was reportedly shown off to developers in August and reports stated that the console will hit shelves by the end of 2024. It’s possible that these games are in development, but may be held back until the launch of the new console.
Of course, Nintendo has not confirmed or teased anything related to either series. Though Pyoro has accurately scooped Nintendo announcements before, video game publishers routinely greenlight new projects and cancel them before they get deep into development.
There’s always going to be excitement around news like this, especially when it comes to franchises that have been left in limbo. Time will tell if Donkey Kong and F-Zero get new games.
