Square Enix is releasing FF14 Mobile, but longtime players are questioning whether the new game will have crossplay or cross-progression.
Developed by LightSpeed Studios, the long-rumored Final Fantasy 14 Mobile comes 11 years after the rework of the highly popular MMORPG. It promises a low-pressure social experience, endless challenges, and the same epic story. However, players have expressed a number of concerns about the mechanics of a mobile remake. One particular concern revolves around the possibility of crossplay, and whether players will have to completely restart.
Here’s whether or not fans can expect to see crossplay or cross-progression in FF14, as well as when the mobile game will become available.
Will FF14 Mobile have crossplay or cross-progression?
Final Fantasy 14 Mobile is unlikely to have crossplay or cross-progression at launch, or any point in the near future.
Based on the initial announcement, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile will be a completely separate project from the original MMORPG. In the reveal announcement, producer and director Naoki Yoshida said developers are working to “faithfully recreate the story duties, battle content, and other aspects of the original game.” Notably, he uses the word “recreated” over “ported,” implying a completely new game.
The official press release adds that current or old players will experience a nostalgic journey. Other spotted changes include only nine jobs and five races being available in the game at launch.
Because of this, FF14 Mobile players shouldn’t expect cross-progression for their existing characters, or crossplay to party up with PC gamers. Those who have already poured time into the console game and want to switch to mobile would then be required to start over. Given that the original FF14 has been out for over a decade, this would be a major blow to some.
Square Enix has not provided any release date details for Final Fantasy 14 Mobile.
According to the November 19 reveal, the game will launch playtesting in mainland China “soon,” but an exact timeline has not been provided. After that, players around the world can try their hand at FF14. Those who want to stay up to date on release information should sign up on the game’s official website.
As more information comes out, potential players will hopefully be pleasantly surprised. Even if FF14 doesn’t have crossplay or cross-progression, it may be able to make the physical mechanics work well enough to be worth the download.
