FromSoftware making multiple new games including Miyazaki project

Armored Core and Elden Ring

FromSoftware has multiple projects in development, including word Hidetaka Miyazaki is working on a new game that will be smaller in scope than previous titles. But what do we know about these titles?

With Elden Ring’s massive success, FromSoftware now has a surprising amount of free time and funds on its hands. With tens of millions of copies sold and a surplus of young talents, the studio is taking a different approach for its next release.

Older fans may know of FromSoftware’s past, before the Soulslike boom. The company once developed a wide variety of games from survival horrors like Echo Night to kid-friendly platformers like The Adventures of Cookies and Cream, FromSoftware is no stranger to different genres. Recent reports reveal some clues about what the next FromSoftware games are and some might be in line with those days.

FromSoftware is known to be working on a new mech game

Multiple reports and interviews confirm potential mecha and fantasy projects from FromSoftware.

According to its new About Us page, FromSoftware now has over 400 employees, a marked increase from its 2020 head count before the release of Elden Ring. These titles will be developed simultaneously, with staggered releases to keep fans engaged with the company’s projects. Nothing concrete has surfaced about the upcoming projects, but there have been some hints about at least one of them.

Job listings on the FromSoftware website called for developers for a mech-themed project. It’s unknown whether this was for Armored Core 6 DLC, or a brand new game.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon notably saw Hidetaka Miyazaki bow out of directing it in its entirety. While this led to questions regarding whether Miyazaki was stepping away from game development to focus more on his executive position in FromSoftware, he does have something up his sleeve.

Hidetaka Miyazaki is directing a new game, but it’s nothing like Elden Ring

Hidetaka Miyazaki is set to direct a new game, but it won’t be anything of the size and scope of Elden Ring. Judging from his statements, it won’t be another game set in a dark fantasy world that’s in its death throes.

“In the mid-to-long term, I would like to work on a more abstract fantasy than anything we’ve done in the past,” said Miyazaki in an interview with 4Gamer.

He also confirmed he was already working on his next project. Inspirations mentioned by Miyazaki include the mecha animes Aura Battler Dunbine and The Vision of Escaflowne. These would line up with the reports that FromSoftware has a “mecha” game in the works.

A dark fantasy mecha game would certainly stand out in a sea of sci-fi robot battlers. Plus, it would perfectly merge two of FromSoftware’s recent successes. With the dark fantasy experience from Elden Ring and the over-the-top mecha action of Armored Core 6, the potential upcoming project is an exciting prospect for fans.

Some fans are also hoping that FromSoftware will revive their abandoned franchises. Games like Tench, Metal Wolf Chaos, and Otogi still have cult fandoms that would love new entries. While FromSoftware has not confirmed any revivals, it’s a good chance to introduce newer fans to what FromSoftware can do outside of Souls games.
