George RR Martin may have leaked an Elden Ring TV show or movie

George RR Martin Elden Ring

George RR Martin, the renowned author of A Song of Ice and Fire and creator of its Game of Thrones TV adaptation, has seemingly revealed that an Elden Ring TV show or movie is in the works.

Elden Ring has had a stellar 2024 so far. The game itself sold over 20 million units in the year after its release. Bandai Namco more recently confirmed that Shadow of the Erdtree has been purchased over 5 million times on its own. Given how FromSoftware now owns full rights to Elden Ring, the studio is positioned to turn it into a major cross-media IP.

The success of Shadow of the Erdtree is at least partly thanks to its story, despite largely playing out off-screen. The intriguing additions to the lore in Shadow of the Erdtree motivated many players to brave the DLC’s difficulty spikes. George RR Martin, who helped imagine Elden Ring’s backstory, teased FromSoftware may have plans to expand Elden Ring even further.

Will Elden Ring have a movie or TV show?

George RR Martin suggested that an Elden Ring movie or TV show is in the works

FromSoftware has not announced a movie or TV adaptation of Elden Ring. George RR Martin inexplicably suggested there are rumors regarding one, though. In a June 2024 post on his website, Martin thanked the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association for presenting the Nebula Award for Game Writing to Elden Ring. He clarified he only did worldbuilding for the project, while Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team did the rest. Naturally, some A Song of Ice and Fire fans took the chance to complain about The Winds of Winter book. Elden Ring has proven to be a worthy use of Martin’s time, given the game’s enormous success.

While acknowledging an award isn’t unusual, a quote from Martin raised eyebrows.

“Oh, and those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on Elden Ring…I have nothing to say. Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor,” Martin said.

What makes this notable is that there haven’t actually been any rumors regarding an Elden Ring TV show or movie. While he didn’t confirm it, the fact that he brought it up at all is notable.

FromSoftware has long stated in financial statements that it plans to scale the Elden Ring “media mix.” There hasn’t been any sign of anything happening on this front, save two graphic novel series.

Elden Ring: The Road to Erdtree, is a manga written and illustrated by Nikiichi Tobita. It follows Aseo, a Tarnished wretch assigned a quest by the mysterious Melina. The manga has a more comedic tone than the game itself, with many fans lovingly calling it “Elden Ring Abridged.” There is also the more serious Elden Ring: Become Lord webtoon.

Given the breadth and nature of Elden Ring’s lore, the most logical possibility would be something in the vein of House of the Dragon, detailing the epic wars that took place long before the main story.
