Microsoft has left 15,000 people out of a job and cancelled games left and right for a year now, so what’s the status of Hideo Kojima’s OD project?
Hideo Kojima’s games often have a mysterious air to them, but OD has been the greatest example of this. The title was ominously revealed as a partnership between Xbox Games and Kojima Productions. Nothing about it was officially revealed until two years later, when fans were treated to a strange trailer packed with movie stars.
Very little is known about the game at this point, with the only revelations being a hint that it may be a Konami-free Silent Hills. But with games like the Perfect Dark remake getting axed, what’s the status of OD? Here’s what we know?
Has OD been cancelled?
OD is still in development, according to a statement by Microsoft in August 2025.
In July 2025, Microsoft slashed 9,000 jobs. This effort saw numerous prominent gaming projects canceled and multiple studios shuttered. This followed previous rounds of layoffs that point to a general divestment from video games by Microsoft, and the possible death of the Xbox brand.
Somehow, OD doesn’t seem to be among the casualties. No word has come from Kojima Productions or Xbox regarding a change in OD’s development. Days after the layoffs, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported that the game remains in development “at least for today.” In August, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier stated on Bluesky that a Microsoft spokesperson told him that the game remains in development as of August 7, 2025.
The game’s future remains questionable. It’s unclear how strong its chances of release are at this point or when it might be released. If it is released, it’s unclear what that would look like, what form it might take, or what platforms it might launch on.
The game was initially revealed as an Xbox exclusive in late 2023. Xbox has gone through several shakeups since then, moving away from big-budget games, new IPs, and producing Xbox exclusives. This makes it unclear what the future holds for OD, even if it isn’t canceled.
When will OD come out?
There is no information on when OD might come out.
Though the game doesn’t seem to be cancelled, there’s no indication regarding when OD might come out. In fact, there isn’t any officially released information on the game. No information on OD’s gameplay, or even its genre, have been confirmed. While the game is believed to be a horror game of some kind, Kojima described it as a “new form of media” in 2023.
So what’s the holdup? Kojima gave fans an update in 2024, stating that the SAG-AFTRA strikes that began earlier in the year had caused a holdup in its development.
“For OD, we developed the game and had actor and environment scanning. In the second half of the year, scanning and filming were suspended due to the SAG strike,” Kojima said.
It’s unclear what state OD might be in at this point. Speed bumps during development, the ongoing issues with Microsoft, and the murky future of the Xbox brand make it unclear whether OD is still on track. Either way, there’s still no indication that OD has been cancelled.
