Here’s what makes Mario Bros. Wonder a whole new experience

The elephant version of Mario in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder wants to take players back to the basics, back when Mario games were 2D side-scrolling platformers. It’s still set to be a unique, modern experience.

The latest Mario game from Nintendo is taking a different approach to the character’s standard formula. “Wonder” is in the name and game director Shiro Mouri wants players to once again feel amazement while playing a Mario game after years of a very standard format.

A new trailer for Super Mario Bros. Wonder shows exactly how the game is old-school and modern at the same time. Here’s what makes the game different from its forerunners.

Does Super Mario Bros. Wonder have online co-op?

Super Mario Bros. Wonder has local co-op multiplayer, but does not have online co-op. Instead, online multiplayer uses a different system where players can help each other, but aren’t actually playing together.

“Until now I think we’ve been cleverly reusing our surprises, but we didn’t want to depend on that this time,” says Shiro Mouri.

Mario Bros. Wonder stresses helping other players and generally having a good time. There is a local co-op mode for up to four players. Players can select the usual Mario characters including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and even Daisy.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder seemingly takes inspiration from Death Stranding for its online mode. While players cannot directly play together online as they can in local co-op, they can still help each other out and indirectly communicate with one another.

There is an emphasis on social elements, as players can see others playing online in real-time as shadows. The shadows can help in subtle ways like reviving other players and placing helpful “standees” at hard-to-clear places. The game rewards players with “Heart Points” for helping others in online play.

Is Super Mario Bros. Wonder hard?

Super Mario Bros. Wonder aims to make the game easier and more accessible by introducing playable Yoshis. The Yoshis cannot take damage from in-game obstacles or enemies.

Players struggling to clear levels can play as any of the Yoshi. Although Yoshi is invincible, it can still fall to its death so timing jumps is essential. This “easy” character lets everyone join the fun, including those who don’t normally play video games.

These are several features that make Super Mario Bros. Wonder stand out from the rest of the games in the series. The “Wonder Flower” from the Flower Kingdom changes the whole level. Touch it and the screen might get tilted, the environment might start moving, and more.

Nintendo has changed a lot with Mario recently, including Mario’s long-time voice actor. The secrets of Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be revealed once players get their hands on it on October 20, 2023.
