Deadlock’s surprise success has many fans wondering if the MOBA and hero shooter hybrid will ever come to Sony’s PS5; is there any chance of it happening?
Valve’s latest title is one of the weirdest success stories of 2024. While Valve kept much info about Deadlock under wraps, the game’s invite-only phase is attracting multiple gamers. However, while Deadlock is playable on Windows through Steam, fans wonder if the game will come to other platforms.
The most asked-for platform is likely the PlayStation 5, which is home to most major multiplayer shooters. While Valve’s games have come to Sony’s home console in the past, fans wonder if Deadlock will make its way to the latest one, and if so, how long they might have to wait.
Will Deadlock come to the PS5?
Neither Valve nor Sony have given any indication that Deadlock will come to the PlayStation 5.
2012’s Counter-Strike: Global Offensive was released for the PlayStation 3, marking the last Valve-developed game to a Sony console. Though many Valve games came out on PS3 including Portal 2, both Left 4 Dead titles, and The Orange Box collection
While the company released the Portal games on the Nintendo Switch in 2022, PlayStation gamers haven’t received any Valve games since.
Valve has always focused on releasing games for the PC, whether entries from the Counter-Strike series or Dota 2. This makes sense as Valve owns Steam, the video game digital distribution service and storefront. When Valve does release games on consoles, this also tends to go poorly. Team Fortress 2 on consoles was immediately overrun with hackers and was never updated. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive’s console release was similarly dropped by Valve.
Deadlock‘s gameplay is very console-friendly, unlike Dota 2. If Valve wants to capture the hero shooter market and create a new MOBA market on consoles, it must release Deadlock on other platforms. Valve’s releasing Deadlock on Nintendo Switch shows that the company appreciates the value of the console market. It’s unclear if Deadlock if Valve is planning to release this new game on them, however.
When will Deadlock come to the PS5?
It’s unknown when or if Valve will port Deadlock to the PlayStation 5, though fans will likely have to wait a while.
On one hand, Deadlock is still in its invite-only phase. The game is seeing major changes including work on many half-baked characters character redesigns, so developing a console port for an unfinished game won’t make sense. It’s unknown when Deadlock will officially come out, which brings up the second point.
Valve has been vocal about console patches being hard for a PC-focused publisher. However, it’s been years since Valve released anything on a PlayStation console.
Since even Riot Games hopped on the console wagon by releasing Valorant for consoles, Deadlock coming to the PS5 is not off the table. Fans will likely have to wait sometime, and a potential console port will heavily rely on whether Deadlock’s success lasts.
The good news is that if Valve is planning to release Deadlock on PS5, fans will have abundant warning. The company makes little effort to hide its half-completed projects, with numerous games and even the Steam Deck being unearthed through data mines and hidden files.
