Just over a week removed from Square Enix announcing a broader multiplatform strategy, the company announced Kingdom Hearts’ impending release on Steam.
It seems that “platform” isn’t just a euphemism for “consoles” for Square Enix. After years of only being available in the Epic Games Store, the company is also set to broaden the availability of its existing PC games to other DRMs. Square Enix is no stranger to Steam, having released a long list of games through the service including SaGa Emerald Beyond in April.
This will see almost the entire Kingdom Hearts series arrive on Steam. Moreover, fans won’t have to wait long to get the games.
Kingdom Hearts Steam release date confirmed
The Kingdom Hearts series will arrive on Steam on June 13.
The games that will come to Steam include:
- Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX
- Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue
- Kingdom Hearts 3 + Re Mind DLC
- Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece
These games were first made available on PC through the Epic Games Store in 2021. This will be the first time the series will be available on Steam. While fan reaction to the Epic Games Store was loudly negative at the time, word of an arrival on Steam was roundly celebrated.
This will see the bulk of the series arrive on Steam.
Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX is a bundle that includes HD remasters of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, as well as Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories, the console remaster of the Game Boy Advance spin-off. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue bundles the console ports of handheld spin-offs Dream Drop Distance and Birth by Sleep, which were originally released on the Nintendo 3DS and PSP. The bundles don’t end there as Kingdom Hearts Integrum Masterpiece bundles all of this together with Kingdom Hearts 3 and its DLC.
Is Kingdom Hearts 4 coming to PC through Steam?
Square Enix has not confirmed whether Kingdom Hearts 4 will come to Steam, but there’s a strong possibility it will happen.
While many fans believe that Square Enix has a broad exclusivity arrangement with PlayStation, this isn’t actually the case. While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 were timed PlayStation 5 exclusives, most of the company’s biggest games have been released on multiple platforms. This includes Kingdom Hearts 3, which launched on PS4 and Xbox One. It was later released on PC and Nintendo Switch.
Odds are that Kingdom Hearts 4 will make its way to PC at some point, and this restructuring by Square Enix could see the game come out on all platforms at once.
Regarding Kingdom Hearts 4’s release date, leakers have reported a 2025 launch. If true, a larger reveal is likely to come later in 2024. There are also indications of a Kingdom Hearts movie, which could tie into the promotion of the game.
Kingdom Hearts 4 was revealed in 2022. Since then, Square Enix has stayed radio silent regarding the game.
