Genshin Impact creator MiHoYo has began development on a new AAA game, according to a new job listing.
MiHoYo is one of the most impressive success stories in the gaming industry. The company established itself in 2021, and yet it has already released multiple hits in the gacha space. Honkai Impact 3rd, Honkai: Star Rail, Tears of Themis, Zenless Zone Zero, and the famed Genshin Impact fill out its stacked roster.
The company’s success is often attributed to its accessible and stylish action games with addictive gacha elements. While MiHoYo has come under fire for some of its gacha practices, the games remain undoubtedly popular. All that extra revenue has to go somewhere, and MiHoYo has begun work on a new AAA project.
What is MiHoYo’s next new game?
MiHoYo’s next new game will reportedly be a AAA sci-fi game with a realistic art style. These details come courtesy of MiHoYo’s official jobs board. MiHoYo is currently looking for 3D character artists with experience designing realistic humanoids and alien monsters. While the studio has plenty of sci-fi experience thanks to the Honkai series, a realistic art style is a huge departure from their typical offerings.
The studio will develop the game on Unreal Engine, a massive change from the company’s usual Unity kit. All of these details showcase a departure from MiHoYo’s usual brand of anime-style games. Many fans compared the move to the development studio Shift Up. Known best as the creators of Nikke, Shift Up surprised fans with the announcement of Stellar Blade, a stylized action-adventure game with notably realistic character designs.
MiHoYo has not revealed the details behind its decision to shift to realistic graphics.
There are multiple theories on what exactly the new project might be. In July 2024, MiHoYo filed trademarks for potential upcoming projects that roughly translated to “Astaweave Haven” and “Hoshimi Haven.” The name makes fans believe the upcoming title will be some kind of farming simulation game, similar to Stardew Valley. However, no ties to the job listing or either of the two trademarks have been established.
Others believe that the new MiHoYo game will have a different art style but still feature the same formula as other MiHoYo titles. Whatever the project is, there’s no doubt that millions of fans will be waiting for it eagerly.
