Sakurai is working on a new game, is it Super Smash Bros 6?

Super Smash Bros creator Masahiro Sakurai’s YouTube series is coming to an end and he says it’s due to a game being in the works, but is it Smash 6?

After “retiring” from Super Smash Bros Ultimate after the final DLC character came out, Sakurai told fans he’d be working on a YouTube series focused on the behind-the-scenes elements of creating games. Now, two years later, Sakurai has announced his final video.

Titled “Masahiro Sakurai on Creating Games: Finale Special,” the video posted on October 22 discussed how the restless game creator went about filming his YouTube series and hinted at a new game in the works. Apparently, Sakurai wrote every script for the series within one month. While fans expressed in the comments that the channel will be missed, there might be something bigger in the works.

Is Sakurai working on Super Smash Bros 6?

Super Smash Bros 6 has not been confirmed by Nintendo at this point. There’s a good chance that this is the new title that Masahiro Sakurai is working on, however.

During his YouTube series, Sakurai hinted at a new Smash game, saying it’s “fair to assume” another game is coming and would be coming eventually.

In his final YouTube video today, Sakurai revealed that he truly is never going to rest. The notoriously hard-working video game creator told fans he submitted a proposal for a new game after finishing the creation of Sora in Smash Ultimat. He says the development team is already been formed and has been working on the game since 2022.

Sakurai did not state what this new game was since Nintendo has not shared any information but due to his previous statements about Smash 6, it could be a new mainline game for the Nintendo Switch 2.

It should be noted, however, that Sakurai hasn’t exclusively worked on Super Smash Bros. He is also the creator of the Kid Icarus and Kirby series. He worked on Kid Icarus: Uprising for the Nintendo DS in 2012 as a director and on Kirby & the Amazing Mirror in 2004 as a “special advisor.”

Aside from that, Sakurai has only been working on Smash titles in the last decade, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t interested in getting involved in his other creations again.
