Sales figures for Persona 5 Royal, 3 Reload & Metaphor confirmed

persona 3 and persona 5 protagonists

Sega has unintentionally revealed sales figures for many of its biggest video game releases including Persona 3 Reload, Persona 5 Royal, Metaphor: ReFantazio, and many more.

Exact sales figures for games are typically kept under relatively tight wraps. Though publishers will often take a victory lap when certain milestones are hit, the day-to-day numbers are kept close to the vest. And oftentimes, they’re permanently swept under the rug if things didn’t go well.

Though Sega didn’t completely open its books, a presentation for stakeholders was released on the company’s official website. This included sales figures for several major releases across the Persona, Sonic, Like a Dragon, and Total War franchises. Though the numbers were meant to be redacted in the larger release, they made their way to the public and have since spread far and wide across social media.

Sales figures for Persona, Like a Dragon, Sonic, and Total War games officially revealed

A presentation for stakeholders was published by Sega to its official website. This included exact sales figures for several major releases through its fiscal year ending in 2025.

This list included 11 titles across Sega’s most prominent and successful IPs. Here’s the full list of games, and their total sales figures:

GameTotal Sales
Persona 5 Royal7.25 million
Persona 3 Reload2.07 million
Shin Megami Tensei 5 + SMT5 Vengeance2.11 million
Sonic Frontiers4.57 million
Team Sonic Racing3.5 million
Sonic Superstars2.43 million
Total War: Three Kingdoms3.21 million
Total War: Warhammer 32.34 million
Yakuza: Like a Dragon2.86 million
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth1.66 million
Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name960,000

This list includes the total sales of each game since release. It does not include alternative versions of the games. For example, the sales figures for Persona 5 Royal does not include the base version of Persona 5. The only exception to this is Shin Megami Tensei 5, which included the sales figures for both the original release as well as its expanded port, Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance.

Persona 5 Royal has better sales figures than Persona 3 Reload

Despite being five years old, Persona 5 Royal boasts is boasting better sales figures than most Sega or Atlus titles, and it eclipsed Persona 3 Reload across multiple fiscal years. It also boasted comparable sales figures to Metaphor: ReFantazio despite the latter game enjoying major commercial and critical success.

The game has total sales of 7.25 million. In 2019, Atlus announced that the base version of Persona 5 sold over 3.2 million. This brings the game’s sales past the 10 million mark, not including any spin-offs like Persona 5 Tactica. What’s most impressive is how sales figures for the game have effectively gone up over time.

The game was initially released as a PlayStation 4 exclusive, and sold over 2 million units along the way. In 2022, Persona 5 Royal was ported to PC, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch, sparking a resurgence in sales.

The game moved 1.82 million units across all platforms in Sega’s fiscal year ending in 2023. Those sales figures have been stable since, with the game selling 1.6 million units in the following year and 1.75 million in the fiscal year ending in 2025. The only game to hit bigger numbers than Persona 5 Royal in any year since its re-release was Sonic Frontiers, which sold 3.2 million units in Sega’s fiscal year ending in 2023.

Persona 5 Royal has also enjoyed significantly higher sales figures than Persona 3 Reload. Head-to-head, Persona 5 Royal sold 1.6 million units in Sega’s fiscal year ending in 2024, compared to Persona 3 Reload’s 1.22 million. In Sega’s fiscal year ending in 2025, Persona 5 Royal’s sales figures more than doubled Persona 3 Reload’s 850,000.

While Persona 5 Royal selling well isn’t a surprise, the enduring numbers show why Sega and Atlus are so reluctant to move past the game.

Sega confirms Metaphor: ReFantazio sales figures

Metaphor: ReFantazio sold over 2 million units within the first eight months of its release according to Sega. This likely places it as the best-selling game of the year for the company.

The game only launched in October 2024, so it missed out out on a chunk of the year. Persona 5 Royal sold 1.75 million units during that same fiscal year.

Despite the comparison, this establishes Metaphor as a significant commercial success for Sega. The game had a AAA look, feel, and release, something many publishers are reluctant to give to a new IP at this point. The game enjoyed huge critical acclaim and was gameland.gg’s own game of the year for 2025

Hitting 2 million units sold for a new IP is no small feat, and shows that JRPGs are capable of being multi-million sellers.
