Moss is one of the newest resources in Stardew Valley 1.6 and some players may need to farm it for various uses.
The Stardew Valley 1.6 update added loads of new content to the quaint little mountain town. From new events like the Desert Festival to new mechanics like the Mastery system, Stardew Valley feels like a whole new game. Of course, not every change is expansion-sized.
Plenty of new resources spawned around the world, leading players to start scouring the land. One of the surprisingly tough resources to farm throughout the year is moss. Thankfully, there’s a way to farm most efficiently in Stardew Valley, but players need to pay attention to the seasons.
How to farm moss in Stardew Valley
Moss spawns on trees and weeds, most often during rainy days.
Common trees have a random chance of growing moss when left unattended. Harvesting the resource is as easy as hitting the tree with any tool, netting the player one to two pieces of moss.
Moss remains relatively rare throughout the year, except during one event; green rain. When this occurs, moss grows on trees much more readily and in vast amounts. Certain weeds also have a higher chance of dropping moss, with large weeds dropping even more. In addition, these green rain trees may drop mossy seeds.
How to grow mossy seeds in Stardew Valley
Mossy seeds can grow into Green Rain Trees that spawn moss on nearby trees throughout their life cycle. These are ultimately the best way to farm moss in Stardew Valley, as of the 1.6 update.
For the most moss, plant these mossy seeds near wild trees. Avoid planting all mossy seeds at once, however. Moss cannot grow during winter. Unless a player has space in their greenhouse, it’s best to have a backup resource for moss given its rarity.
Moss is a key resource for multiple useful items:
- Speed-Gro
- Mushroom Log
- Statue of Blessings
- Deluxe Worm Bin
- Deluxe Bait
- Challenge Bait
- Treasure Totem
- Blue Grass Starter
- Moss Soup
- Green Dye
In addition, players can trade moss with Raccoon’s wife at the Giant Stump for broccoli seeds. Overall, moss is a rare resource that can nevertheless be cultivated, especially after a green rain event.
