Counter-Strike 2 fans were in a for a shock in the quarterfinals of the 2026 IEM Cologne Major, as favorire and two-time defending Major champion Team Vitality was knocked out in nail-biting fashion by Team Falcons. Here’s how it happened.

Vitality entered IEM Cologne as the event’s favorite in the eyes of most fans and observers across CS2. While the side hasn’t been the absolutely dominant force it once was in 2025, 2026 has still been a good year for Vitality. A championship victory at IEM Krakow was the highlight to this point, and allowed Team Vitality to claim a second consecutive Grand Slam trophy, making it the first team to do so in Counter-Strike history.

Winning a third consecutive Major would have further solidified this group’s place in the game’s history. But it wasn’t to be, as the side came undone in a quarterfinals series that was as close it could possibly be.

Team Falcons defeat Vitality in IEM Cologne 2026 playoffs

Expectations were high for the quarterfinal battle between Vitality and Falcons in the IEM Cologne playoffs, and those expectations were delivered on to the utmost. All three games in the three-map series went down to the final round before being decided.

With Falcons winning on Anubis and Vitality striking back on Inferno, the match would come down to the game’s most famous map: Dust 2. Falcons opened the map with an 8-4 attacking first half, a solid start that had Vitality on the back foot.

But the defending Major champions wouldn’t go down without a fight. Keyed by mezii and team captain apEX, Vitality fought all the way back the 24th and final round.

In that round, Falcons captain karrigan came through in the clutch with an aggressive flank from short to catch multiple Vitality players unaware at mid doors before slipping back to a defensive position. This double without the possibility of a trade was too much for Vitality to overcome, and Falcons was soon celebrating an epic victory.

The loss left apEX in tears on stage as his teammates and coach XTQZZZ offered what comfort they could.

Where does Vitality go from here?

While the final result at IEM Cologne was undoubtedly disappointing for Team Vitality, the two-time Major championship winning roster remains generally strong. There’s no reason to think this group can’t find further success as the year progresses, and the Vitality organization should have a solid shot at another Major title later in the year.

That said, the result did feel like the end of an era for Vitality, a time during which the team seemed all but unbeatable behind apEX’s high-energy leadership and the AWP of CS2 legend ZywOo.

As for Team Falcons, it moves forward into the semifinals of the playoffs at the 2026 IEM Cologne Major where it will face a game Team Spirit for a spit in the finals. There, the winner of that match will face off with the winner of a semifinal between Aurora and Furia.
