How NiKo won his first Major title with Falcons at IEM Cologne

Nikola “NiKo” Kovač had long been one of Counter-Strike’s brightest stars, and at IEM Cologne 2026, he finally won his first CS Major trophy. Here’s how it happened.

NiKo and his teammates at Team Falcons weren’t necessarily the favorites to win at IEM Cologne, but they were definitely considered to be in the running. Falcons had three times finished as a runner-up at tournaments in 2026, always seeming on the cusp of championship glory while not quite getting over the hump.

That changed in a big way in Cologne, Germany, where the squad triumphed in emphatic fashion by rolling over Furia 3-0 in a grind finals sweep.

It was fitting that NiKo’s long title drought would end with him leading his team to victory, as he was likely the best player in the server for Falcons as they beat Furia 3-0.

The Bosnian star player posted positive stats across all three maps played, and led his side in frags in the final map of Inferno. He totaled 52 frags across the three games played.

While sniper m0NESY struggled in the final map, he was a tremendous anchor for Falcons across the first two games on Mirage and Anubis, repeatedly frustrating a Furia side that ultimately looked hapless after what had been a great tournament run.

Falcons certainly earned the Major trophy at IEM Cologne. The squad overcame NAVI in the group stage to qualify for the playoffs, then found itself facing a road of Vitality, Team Spirit, and Furia through the bracket. That’s three of the top five teams in the world, with NAVI making it four.

Despite the great difficulty of Falcons’ draw, they still managed to prevail, beating Vitality in a tense three-game series before sneaking past Spirit and then ultimately dominating Furia in the grand final.

NiKo had famously come up short twice at the finish line in CS Major competition. The most memorable of those instances by far was the result of a classic series lost to Cloud9 at the Boston Major in 2018. Then, in 2021, NiKo and his cousin huNter came up short with G2 versus NAVI.

On both occasions, NiKo and his teammates were ultimately eliminated after multiple overtime periods. This time, there would be no such drama as Falcons dismissed Furia in short order.

FalleN heads towards retirement after Furia runs end at IEM Cologne

While it was all smiles and celebrations for NiKo and Team Falcons, IEM Cologne proved a bittersweet event for FalleN and his Furia teammates. Making it to a Major final is no small feat, but coming up short will be a bitter pill to swallow.

That’s particularly true given FalleN’s recent announcement that he would soon be wrapping up his Counter-Strike playing career. He heads towards retirement as one of the game’s most decorated players in its long history, and arguably the most influential figure in Brazilian Counter-Strike specifically.

FalleN already had two Major trophies to his credit, winning both in 2016 with the same core roster as it moved between Luminosity Gaming and SK Gaming.
