When is Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 coming out? Not soon.

Square Enix Director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed information about the release window for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 in a surprise interview, and fans who are excited about Rebirth will be disappointed to know that it’s not coming out any time soon.

The announcement that the Final Fantasy 7 Remake would be a trilogy and released with long gaps between each installment received a mixed response. Square Enix avoided backlash to some degree by making a game of the year contender, and Rebirth is looking to do the same.

But with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, launching four years after the first installment, fans are wondering if the third game will follow a similar development and release schedule. Fans got an answer, and it’s not one to get particularly excited about.

Hamaguchi gave an update on where Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 stands in terms of its development in an interview with YouTuber Julien Chieze. Alongside tidbits of how things are coming along, Hamaguchi also revealed the release window Square is aiming for.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 release date details

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 has a 2028 release window, judging by statements from Naoki Hamaguchi.

“When we got to the end of the development for Remake, we started talking about a sequel with [writer Kazushige Nojima] and I think we can say that we are in the same situation today,” Hamaguchi said when asked about the state of the Final Fantasy Remake Part 3.

The first Final Fantasy 7 Remake entry completed development and was released in 2020, followed by Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024. If the third part follows the same trajectory, that would suggest that Square Enix is aiming for a 2028 release window for Part 3.

The development of the final part could be shortened by reusing existing assets. While fans might shudder at the thought, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth needed a completely new set of assets due to Remake taking place entirely within the city of Midgar. While there will be more areas to explore in the finale, there will also be retreading several familiar environments which could lighten the development burden to the point where it comes out sooner.

Which platforms will Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 release on?

It is unknown what platforms Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will be released on, but it could wind up on either PlayStation 5, possibly the PlayStation 6, or both.

The first two entries in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy have also been PlayStation-timed exclusives, with the first launching for the PlayStation 4 and Rebirth coming to the PS5. The timed exclusivity for FF7 Remake lasted for over a year before it launched on PC. There have been hints of the game coming out on both Xbox and Nintendo platforms, though nothing official has materialized.

Which platforms the game comes out on is uncertain until an actual release date materializes. Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 will likely also be playable on the PlayStation 5 and the reportedly incoming PS5 Pro. The internal expectation for Microsoft was for the new console generation to start in 2027 or 2028, and it’s anyone’s guess what Square Enix’s exclusivity plans will be or what the gaming industry will look like by that point.
