Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden joins several other games for a stacked February 2024 release.
Banishers is one of the most anticipated single-player action RPGs for 2024, alongside the likes of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Black Myth: Wukong. Previous action RPGs from its developer, Don’t Nod, include Vampyr and Remember Me. Vampyr’s success is the biggest reason for this new game getting greenlit.
However, production wasn’t without its hurdles. Although slated for a November 2023 release, the game was moved to February 2024. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden stands out as an original IP in an industry populated by sequels and remakes.
What is Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden about?
Banishers: Ghost of New Eden is an action RPG about a ghost-hunter couple named Red and Antea set in 1600s North America. The two protagonists swore an oath; life to the living, death to the dead. After being hired to lift a curse on a small town named New Eden, Antea is unexpectedly murdered.
However, Antea comes back as a ghost, the very beings they swore to hunt down. Despite this predicament, Antea is dedicated to helping Red find a way out of this predicament while continuing their ghost-hunting careers.
As for the gameplay, it utilizes RPG action gameplay centered around Red’s practical weaponry and Antea’s supernatural abilities. Several playstyles are teased in the trailers and gameplay footage revealed thus far. Exploration is also a key aspect of the game, with Antea’s supernatural traversal abilities becoming pretty handy.
Will Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden have choices like Life is Strange?
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden emphasizes the importance of choice, much like Life Is Strange.
New Eden is rife with moral quandaries that the player will have to solve. There are three core choices that the player takes throughout the story. “Blame” kills a living person, justified by Red for their alleged sins. “Banish” sends away the souls of the departed, ensuring an eternity of unrest. Finally, “Ascend” allows spirits to leave the mortal plane peacefully.
Naturally, choice-based gameplay means alternate endings for the game, giving it a lot of replayability. Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden releases on February 13, 2024, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
