Xbox may have plans to revive a beloved JRPG from the Xbox 360 and many fans hope it’s Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey
The Xbox has a complicated, if not outright chaotic, history regarding its first-party exclusives. From canceled projects like Scalebound to critical and commercial flops like Too Human, Xbox hasn’t gotten exclusives to stick outside of Halo and Gears of War. Recent history shows that even if it does happen, there’s no guarantee that Microsoft successfully follows through. That doesn’t mean that all these games were bad, though.
Blue Dragon, developed by Mistwalker and Artoon, takes the classic Japanese RPG formula and ports it to the decidedly American Xbox 360. Classic in structure from top to bottom, Blue Dragon even uses multiple discs, the first game to do so for the Xbox 360. Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi created his own studio and developed a pair of games for Xbox.
Blue Dragon was a modest commercial and critical success, and cultivated a dedicated fanbase. Lost Odyssey was a deliberately old-school experience on cutting-edge hardware. Now, fans might have a chance to see more of the JRPG classic.
Will Blue Dragon get an Xbox-exclusive sequel?
An Xbox 360-era JRPG is reportedly set to be revived, and some believe it to be Blue Dragon.
XboxEra’s Nick ‘SpheshalNick” Baker states that he has heard reports of an Xbox 360-era JRPG appearing at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2024. Baker did not elaborate on which JRPG will return. Discussion and speculation has centered on Blue Dragon. Akira Toriyama’s visual style is timeless, and turn-based JRPGs have grown in popularity in recent years even as games like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth move away from this style.
Notably, Blue Dragon has two sequels, though neither launched for Microsoft platforms. Instead, Blue Dragon Plus and Blue Dragon: Awakened Shadow were exclusive to the Nintendo DS. These sequels received a more mixed reception compared to their Xbox predecessor. However, there’s another JRPG classic that this could be referring to.
Will Lost Odyssey get an Xbox-exclusive sequel?
Microsoft has not confirmed a Lost Odyssey sequel.
While Blue Dragon is a beloved cult classic in its own right, fans frequently tout Lost Odyssey as Xbox’s Final Fantasy. From its grandiose style to soap opera storytelling, fans will immediately recognize Sakaguchi’s signature style. Not to mention, Final Fantasy composer Nobuo Uematsu’s iconic soundtrack serenades the player throughout the experience.
Lost Odyssey could be Xbox’s attempt to reel in classic JRPG fans, given the resurgence of Final Fantasy 7 games. Regardless, fans won’t have to wait very long to find out which JRPG classic Xbox will decide to revive.
