The Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee has just rated Bully again, which strongly suggests that a remake or remaster of the game is inbound.
It’s been almost two decades since the original Bully came out on the PlayStation 2. Since then, the game has returned as the Scholarship Edition. Developed by Rockstar Vancouver, the action-adventure game soon became a fan favorite for being “GTA in school.”
Fans of the game have been waiting for a sequel for a long while. The game was released on Android and iOS devices, further recruiting more fans to the Bully cause. With Grand Theft Auto 6 still over a year away, Rockstar has plenty of time to give Bully fans what they want.
Is a Bully remake or remaster in the works?
A Bully remake or remaster was effectively confirmed by a game ratings board.
Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee published an entry that states a new version of Bully version is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, as well as last-generation consoles including PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. However, there is no mention of a Nintendo Switch version of Bully, a console that would greatly benefit from a portable version of the game. An Xbox 360 version is also rated, though this already exists.
A re-release of Bully has long been the subject of fan discussion, egged on by occasional suggestions that it’s real. Data mines and leaks have suggested that a Bully revival was in the works in one form or another.
Luckily for fans, Bully hasn’t been completely unavailable. The PlayStation 2 version of the game can be played on the PlayStation 4 console through PlayStation Plus. The Bully: Scholarship Edition is also available on PC. The Xbox 360 version of the game is playable on Xbox Series X/S consoles.
Rockstar has not announced a Bully remake or remaster, but the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee listing constitutes an official source confirming the game’s existence and potentially imminent release.
Is Bully 2 in the works?
There is no word on a Bully 2 being in development, but a remake or remaster of the original could be testing the waters for a sequel.
A data leak last year confirmed that Bully 2 was in development at Rockstar New England at one point. However, the project was last active between 2010 to 2013. With Grand Theft Auto 6 entering the final stages of development, Rockstar will have all hands on deck for that game.
Rockstar could have a better history with remasters. The Grand Theft Auto Definitive Edition received flack for its downgraded graphics and performance. The Red Dead Redemption remaster got panned for not doing enough to justify its price tag. It remains to be seen how Bully gets the remastered or remake treatment.
