Streaming service Netflix is reportedly working on a live-action series based on the popular franchise Pokemon and story details may have been revealed.
Pokemon doesn’t have any shortage of media to consume. From music to movies to health and wellness trackers, what was once a franchise primarily associated with video games and trading cards is now much more. However, the expansion is never-ending, and in addition to the next generation of games, the Pokemon Company might partner with a popular streaming service.
According to a Hollywood leaker, fans might see a live-action series based on the franchise. While details on the project are scarce, they gave details about who the series protagonist might be and long-time Pokemon fans will be excited.
Netflix live-action adaptation of Pokemon is reportedly in development
A leaker states that a Netflix live-action adaptation of Pokemon starring original player character Red is in the works.
This leak comes from DanielRPK, a notable leaker who has accurately reported on upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe content. He stated on his Patreon that Netflix’s long-rumored Pokemon was still “reportedly in development.”
Reports of Netflix working on a live-action Pokemon series have been floating around since 2021. At the time, the series was reportedly in early development and Joe Henderson was apparently attached to write and executive produce it. Henderson is best known for working on Lucifer and White Collar.
Who will be the protagonist of the live-action Pokemon series?
The protagonist of the live-action Pokemon series will reportedly be Red, though it’s unknown if the show will have an original story or be an adaptation of the games.
Red being the protagonist of the series suggests it will cover the Kanto games or the Pokemon Adventures manga. Both storylines have the character start his adventure in Pallet Town and see him work his way to champion status while defeating Team Rocket. Though the Pokemon games have consistently portrayed Red as a silent character, he has talked normally in every other form of Pokemon media.
While Red was also featured in the animated Pokemon Origins anime, and the franchise has a live-action movie in the form of Detective Pikachu, this would be the first live-action Pokemon series.
Netflix has become a go-to home for Pokemon content. The streaming service hosts much of Pokemon’s back catalog of anime, and launched an original series in 2023; Pokemon Concierge. While Netflix is actively canceling many of its animated series, the company confirmed that Pokemon Concierge would be renewed.
