The Netflix original anime Blood of Zeus faces its final season with Season 3, and fans wonder why this is happening and why the show has been canceled prematurely.
After the runaway success of Castlevania and Castlevania: Nocturne, a pair of gritty, adult-oriented dark fantasy animated shows, Netflix greenlit more. And then even more. Blood of Zeus was among those shows, a series steeped in its own take on Greek mythology. The series follows Heron, the demigod son of Zeus, who embarks on a quest to uncover a conspiracy to destroy Olympus.
Blood of Zeus debuted in October 2020 to generally positive reviews, with a second season greenlit in December 2020. However, it would take four years before Blood of Zeus Season 2 finally dropped on May 2024. The creators recently announced its third (and reportedly last) season at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.
Is Blood of Zeus canceled?
Netflix has canceled Blood of Zeus’ planned fourth and fifth seasons. The show is now set to end after its third season.
“We’ve planned out what we would hope to be a five-season arc,” said creators Charley and Vlas Parlapanides in an interview with Inverse in October 2020. The creators elaborated the five-season plan would depend on the show’s success.
Despite the early greenlight for Blood of Zeus’ second season, it took four years before the final release. Fans speculate the delay was due to the show’s animation team being busy with other projects. Powerhouse Animation Studios worked on Masters of the Universe, Skull Island, Castlevania: Nocturne, and the upcoming Tomb Raider animated series.
While Blood of Zeus received positive reviews, the reception likely wasn’t as impactful as Netflix expected. Netflix’s current direction regarding animated series is vague. Series like Blood of Zeus are being axed and confirmed successes like Baki Hanma are seeing sequels that aren’t attached to Netflix.
News of Blood of Zeus being canceled was seemingly met with public frustration by Powerhouse staff. On July 22, 2024, Castlevania director Samuel Deats lamented how Netflix was willing to pour massive sums into the production of live-action series, but animated series were fighting for their continued existence.

Blood of Zeus Season 3 will premiere in 2025.
The creators have not set an exact date, but it’s a shorter wait than what fans dealt with between Season 1 and Season 2. Fans worry the five-season arc will get crammed into the third and final season.
Hopefully, fans will still enjoy a satisfying conclusion for the Greek Mythology dark fantasy. Otherwise, they may have to wait for Castlevania Nocturne Season 2 for a more satisfying follow-up to a beloved Netflix animated series.
