Valve has created a new gameplay recording program with the Steam Game Recorder that’s great for recording highlight reels, full matches, or bloopers without downloading extra software.
Counter-Strike 2 is a tense and skill-heavy game. So, recording epic gameplay moments and sharing them online is a pastime for plenty of CS2 players, and this applies to thousands of other games on Steam. Previously, players had to rely on third-party software to record their gameplay. Streaming tools like OBS and other software help capture CS2 matches. But now, players can use this new Steam feature to cut out the middleman.
The new Steam Recorder isn’t available to everyone yet, but the beta version is available. Players interested in recording their CS2 gameplay must follow a few steps to set it up.
How to get the Steam Game Recorder
Players can get the Steam Game Recorder by using the Steam beta client.
This feature is initially available through the beta version of Steam. Players interested in saving gameplay footage will need to opt into the program.
Thankfully, anyone can easily switch to the beta version of Steam, which has new and experimental features. No invites or codes are necessary. Players need to opt into the beta and from there, Steam client will restart and have the Steam Game Recorder feature. The Steam beta client will largely be identical to the existing version of Steam, but will offer in-development features.
Here’s how to get the Steam beta client:
- Open Steam
- Click on Steam then Settings from the menu
- Select Interface
- Find “Client Beta Participation” in the menu
- Select “Steam Beta Update” in the drop-down menu
- Download update and restart Steam
How to use Steam Game Recorder
Players can launch the Steam Game Recorder through Steam’s settings menu in the beta client.
In the beta client, players can find a new “Game Recording” section of the menu. From there, it’s simply a matter of a matter of launching the program and setting up the parameters for the recording session. Here’s the step-by-step process for getting and using the Steam Game Recorder:
- Open Steam
- Click on Steam and open Settings menu
- Select the Game Recording option
- From there, select the Record in Background option
- Adjust the recording parameters like video duration, quality, and allotted space
How to manually control the Steam Game Recorder
Players can manually control the Steam Game Recorder with key combinations.
The default shortcut to start manual recordings during CS2 matches is Ctrl+F11, but users can customize the keyboard shortcut. Select the Record on Demand option in the Game Recording settings to enable the manual recording feature.
The on-demand recordings are less taxing on the system as they only record when the player presses the keyboard shortcut. However, players must use the keyboard to start and stop recordings. The feature is excellent when recording whole matches but cumbersome when capturing match highlights.
