Sea of Thieves lets players explore the vast sea but its launch on PS5 raises questions about how cross-platform works, given how it’s long been available on Xbox and PC.
Developed by Rare of Banjo-Kazooie fame, Sea of Thieves was made with multiplayer in mind. While being a swashbuckling pirate is plenty of fun, it’s not exactly profitable for them to hunt for treasure alone. Every ship needs men, women, and everyone in between to keep it moving across the violent sea.
The Sea of Thieves story comes not from the game itself but from the experiences of each player. Perhaps one player will strike up a friendship with someone who spawned near them while others fight tooth and nail to horde the booty for themselves. With all that said, some players wonder if these multiplayer adventures exist for every player, regardless of platform.
Does Sea of Thieves have cross-platform play?
Sea of Thieves allows cross-platform play between PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Fortunately for Sea of Thieves players, they will find no shortage of adventurers to play with thanks to comprehensive cross-platform play. If a console can run Sea of Thieves, they can play it with anybody else who can. This is especially handy for friend groups who own Sea of Thieves on different platforms.
While Xbox fans huffed and puffed about Sea of Thieves being ported to PlayStation 5, the game landing on a new platform is a definite positive. Player counts for the game on PS5 and Xbox are unknown, as these figures are not made publicly available. The game benefitted from landing on new consoles regardless.
Console players can also disable crossplay with PC players to avoid cheaters from that port. Simply go to the Settings menu, find the Matchmaking tab, and disable Allow Crossplay. Many players believe the built-in anti-cheat for Sea of Thieves on PC is ineffective. Keep this setting in mind when not playing with friends.
Does Sea of Thieves allow cross-saves?
Sea of Thieves allows for cross-saves and cross-progress across all platforms including PS5, Xbox consoles, and PC.
Regardless of platform, every Sea of Thieves player must log in through a Microsoft account before playing. The requirement means progress is the same regardless of the platform Sea of Thieves is played on.
For players looking to move between platforms, whether to transition from PC to console or vice versa, this is a much-appreciated feature. It also makes sharing characters much easier for friends and family. Overall, Sea of Thieves is a great multiplayer experience with plenty of conveniences.
