A social media misfire has seemingly revealed that a new Lego Harry Potter title is incoming, including a release date.
It’s a good time to be a Harry Potter fan. Alongside discussion of Quidditch coming to Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games’ South African branch may have jumped the gun on revealing a new Wizarding World game release. The corporate Instagram account put out an ominous post that revealed a new Lego Harry Potter game is coming. The Instagram post was swiftly deleted but users were quick to screengrab it and post it elsewhere.
Rumors regarding a new title were already swirling, and fans can now add a release date to the mix. Here’s everything that’s known about the game and when it’s coming out.
New Lego Harry Potter game release date revealed
WB Games South Africa revealed that a new Lego Harry Potter title is coming on August 25, 2023.
No details were given on the game beyond the release date, but there were rumors about its existence before the leak. Discussion centered around the idea of the Wizarding World titles receiving something akin to Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga compiled the Lego Star Wars adaptations of all nine mainline Star Wars films and released them on modern consoles. It also added a significant amount of new content and overhauled combat, including the ability to move to an over-the-shoulder camera view when using blasters.
This approach could work for the Lego Harry Potter series. The original titles were dubbed “Years 1-4” and “Years 5-7,” with the former covering the first four films while the latter covered the last four. The games were released in 2010 and 2011, respectively.
In 2016, the two games were bundled and remastered on PlayStation 4 as the Lego Harry Potter Collection. In 2018, it was released on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. These bundles did not add additional content relative to their original releases.
The new game could simply be a port of Lego Harry Potter Collection to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Though the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game can be played on the console, there has been a proper release that takes advantage of the newer hardware. Fans are undoubtedly hoping that the new release will include more content, but there are no official details as of yet.
Will the new Lego Harry Potter include Fantastic Beasts?
The Fantastic Beasts trilogy will not be added to the Lego Harry Potter games.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga included new content based on The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, which hadn’t previously been adapted in video game form. While fans might have hoped to see the more Fantastic Beasts trilogy get a similar treatment, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
Adapting three more films into the game would be a significant undertaking for the studio, and creating that much more content likely would have been highlighted by the studio. With The Skywalker Saga’s reveal trailer, it explicitly acknowledged that all nine films would be adapted.
Couple that with the quick turnaround between the reveal and the actual release date, and it seems like fans are unlikely to get a significant update to this new Lego Harry Potter game.
