A Persona 4 remake may be in the works, here’s what Atlus is up to

persona 4 remake

Atlus is reportedly working on remakes and remasters of multiple games from its back catalog, including Persona 4, 2, and 1.

Developers love revisiting their old IPs, with series like Resident Evil, Pokemon, and Like a Dragon releasing remakes that are among the most beloved in the series. The Persona series generally avoided remakes, and only recently began re-releasing its back catalog to modern consoles. Persona 3 Reload’s success may have invigorated Atlus to develop even more remakes, though.

Jet Set Radio and Virtua Fighter are among the older games that Sega is looking to dust off, but all signs pointed toward new installments being the priority for the Persona series. A leaker who has repeatedly gotten ahead of Sega, Atlus, and P Studio on breaking Persona news says this isn’t fully the case, and the developers are also working on remakes of Persona 2 and Persona 4.

Is Atlus remaking Persona 4?

A remake of Persona 4 is reportedly in the works.

A leaker named Midori, who revealed the DLC for Persona 5 Tactica and broke the news on Persona 3 Reload being made, responded to a question about remakes. Fans specifically asked about Persona 2 and Persona 4, and she responded that “both exist at Atlus.”

She later added that another PlayStation 2 game from Atlus’ catalog is also being remade. Alongside this was a reiterating of a previous report regarding a new Shin Megami Tensei game being made for Netflix Gaming and the note that there will be a Shin Megami Tensei game being remastered.

Persona 2

They clarified their previous statement that not all of these remakes will be a complete overhaul akin to Persona 3 Reload. Whether these titles are heavily modified ports like Persona 3 Portable, an HD remaster with modified gameplay similar to The World Ends With You on the Nintendo Switch, or something else is unclear.

An interview with Sega’s COO Shuji Utsumi for CNBC in November 2023 included the release of two new Persona games for 2024. Persona 3 Reload is one of them and the other is reportedly an unreleased Persona party game starring characters from all mainline titles, according to Midori. Although the remakes exist at Atlus, neither are seeing a 2024 release. Alongside the Persona games, P Studio is developing the new Metaphor franchise, which takes elements from Shin Megami Tensei and Persona and transplants them into a high fantasy setting.

When will a Persona 4 remake come out?

It’s unknown when a Persona 4 remake will come out, but with the sheer number of confirmed projects in development, it could be years away.

Persona 3 Reload and the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio are both in development, with Reload having DLC data coded into the game and the other potentially receiving DLC after release.  The unannounced Persona party game will likely be a spin-off in the same vein as Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight.

Midori reported on November 2023 that Persona 6 will release in 2025. Atlus has confirmed that the game is in the works, but has not offered an estimated release date.

Given how little information there is to work with when it comes to the Persona 4 and Persona 2 remakes, it’s possible that it may not even be truly greenlit. Regardless of when it comes out, fans of the Persona franchise have guaranteed games for the next two years and Persona 4 Golden is available to play on all modern platforms, and remains strong even today.
