Are trainer Pokemon cards a hint at Black and White remakes?

The Pokemon TCG is releasing new trainer cards in 2025 and fans are hoping that they’re a clue about remakes for the Black and White games.

Previously known as “owner’s Pokemon,” trainer Pokemon cards include a trainer and usually some indication of ownership or affiliation. The Pokemon TCG has done this on and off over the years, dating back to the Gym Heroes expansion in 2000.

After the Pokemon World Championship ended, the TCG released a brand new trailer showcasing the new line of cards. Not only did fans get to see new card designs, but some are theorizing that the trailer also revealed the next mainline Pokemon game after Pokemon Legends Z-A. Here are the announced new trainer Pokemon cards as well as why some fans think that a Black and White remake is next.

New trainer Pokemon for Marnie, Lillie, N confirmed

The Pokemon TCG confirmed that at least three trainers would have their own Pokemon, including Lillie, Marnie, and N. More are likely to come.

In the trailer, several trainer cards were shown on screen along with animations of the trainers and their Pokemon. The lineup of confirmed cards includes:

  • Lillie’s Clefairy EX
  • Marnie’s Impidimp
  • Marnie’s Morgrem
  • Marnie’s Grimmsnarl EX
  • N’s Reshiram
  • N’s Zorua
  • N’s Zoroark EX
  • N’s Reshiram full art

There are plenty of other trainer-Pokemon combos that could be included such as Arven and his Masbostiff, Misty’s Psyduck, and Lance’s Charizard. All were shown in brief at the end of the trailer, as was the Team Rocket Logo to possibly indicate Giovanni trainer cards.

N’s trainer prevalence could point to a Black and White remake

Some fans are sure that N’s team showcase points to Black and White as Game Freak’s next remake.

Out of the five trainer Pokemon cards confirmed, N featured in three of them. Additionally, the trailer shows his entire team fighting some of the newer Pokemon like Chien-Pao and Dragapult. Fans across platforms have been commenting that this has to be a teaser for a Black and White remake.

There have been potential gen-10 developments that could make a remaster either an unlikely win or a red herring. Since Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team was announced with little notice, a new Black and White might be unlikely but certainly not impossible.

Pokemon Legends Z-A is the likely next mainline Pokemon game release, but Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Scarlet and Violet all came out within roughly 12 months. With Game Freak scaling up operations, there could be a window for a return to Unova.

The trainer Pokemon cards won’t be out until 2025. With any luck, a Pokemon Black and White remake won’t be too far behind.
