Wolfe Glick out of 2024 Pokemon World Championships: What happened?

Wolfe “WolfeyVGC” Glick has been eliminated from the 2024 Pokemon VGC World Championship in a dramatic reversal of fortunes.

The Pokemon World Championship is a brutal test of skill and mental endurance. Players have to fly across the world and then play a game of strategy all day for three days straight in order to win. WolfeyVGC has been there and done that before, taking the top prize in 2016, and it seemed like he was going to do so again.

But after an electrifying start to the event, the wheels flew off with the veteran player finishing in the top 32. Here’s what happened to Wolfe Glick at Worlds 2024.

Wolfe Glick starts 2024 Pokemon World VGC World Championship with undefeated streak

WolfeyVGC started of the 2024 Pokemon World Championship with a white-hot winning streak, going undefeated on day one.

His event started with a victory over top Peruvian player Rainer Arana and followed that up by taking down Japanese veteran Rikuto Noda. From there, he took back-to-back wins over Italian players Francesco Luigi Pardini and Alessandro Fantinato. In round five, he faced an up-and-comer in Japan’s  Kenya Kodera, but ran through him to set up an advancement match in round six.

Glick wound up facing Riley Factura round six, an opponent he knew well. The two faced off in the finals to the first regional of the season, with Factura taking the Pittsburgh Regional championship. This time, Glick got the better of their showdown.

From there he took a victory over Sho Akiyama and stepped into round eight looking to finish the day undefeated. He did so at the expense of Hyuma Hara to finish the day 8-0. Following this, WolfeyVGC stated on X that he was perfect in the 2024 Pokemon World Championships through day one. Not only had he gone 8-0 on matches and 16-0 in terms of games. With Pokemon being an RNG-heavy game, this is an incredible feat.

WolfeyVGC fizzles during 2024 Pokemon World Championship Day 2

Day two of the 2024 Pokemon World Championship saw a radical turnaround for Wolfe Glick.

His undefeated streak continued for a time. He opened the day on-stream for a match against Hirofumi Kimura. Kimura, despite being the 2019 World Championship second-place finisher, looked like easy pickings for Glick as he extended his record to 9-0 and made it to 18 straight game wins. By defeating Kimura, he also wound up as the sole undefeated player in the pool.

While those are major accomplishments, the wheels flew off from there. Facing the 8-1 Marco Hemantha Kaludura Silva, the Italian player handed Wolfe Glick his first loss of the 2024 Pokemon World Championship to fall to 9-1. From there, he took another step back against Diego Ferreira.

That put Glick in a position where he would have to win out in order to advance forward, but this didn’t pan out. In round 12, he faced Canada’s Kylan Van Severen, a player that was a staple of the World Championship in younger divisions who finally aged into the Masters Division. Van Severen defeated Glick to end his tournament. Officially, WolfeyVGC finishes in the top 32; an impressive run that he still lamented on social media.

What was Wolfe Glick’s team at the 2024 Pokemon VGC World Championship?

Wolfe Glick’s team included a powerful mix of Pokemon, put together around Shadow Rider Calyrex.

The team was a mix of meta staples built around one of the strongest restricted Pokemon in the format and arguably the strongest possible fire-water-grass core. WolfeyVGC’s full team for the 2024 VGC World Championship included the following Pokemon:

  • Shadow Rider Calyrex
  • Rapid Strike Urshifu
  • Incineroar
  • Rillaboom
  • Farigaraf
  • Raging Bolt

WolfeyVGC washed out of the 2023 VGC World Championship on day one with a relatively quirky lineup that included a Sap Sipper Farigaraf. 2024 went considerably better, as he used a lineup that used standard meta Pokemon.

His use of Incineroar in particular might raise an eyebrow with fans of his YouTube content. He famously rages about the gen-seven starter Pokemon, but has never denied its power. Glick will likely continue grinding into the future, but he faces a very different game going forward. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Regulation H will shed all legendary, sub-legendary, and Paradox Pokemon.
