Can you change your username in League of Legends?

Viktor in League of Legends

Some League of Legends players may want to change their usernames, but does Riot Games even make it possible?

League of Legends celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2024. Understandably, the popular MOBA has undergone many changes over the years, and so have its players. Much of the League of Legends player base has been around since its early years, likely with the same names they had upon creating it.

However, it’s worth noting that usernames differ from Riot ID. A username is the name that players use to sign onto their accounts on the Riot website and in the League of Legends client. Typically, nobody but the owner of the username and Riot Games itself can see that name. The name that other people see is Riot ID. However, some players may have used their username as their Riot ID, making them wonder if that can be changed.

Can I change my League of Legends username?

Players cannot change their League of Legends username. However, they can change their Riot ID.

Unfortunately, users cannot change their League of Legends username under normal circumstances. Unless the player can justify their case as “extraordinary” to Riot Support, such as a potential hack, the username will likely remain in place permanently.

Although players will forever have to be reminded of their young naming conventions, other players don’t have to know. Instead, they can change their Riot ID, the public name shown to other players. Follow these steps to change Riot ID:

  • Sign in on the official Riot website
  • Go to the Riot Account page
  • Navigate to the Riot ID tab
  • Click on Game Name and change to preference
  • Click on Save Changes

Users can only change their Riot ID once every 90 days. Special circumstances, such as targeted harassment, can qualify players for an earlier name change with Riot Support.

League of Legends has a surprisingly bumpy history with names

Riot has made many changes to player names in League of Legends.

In 2022, Riot added the champion anonymity feature, which allowed players to hide their Summoner name during Ranked Champion Select. The feature was added to discourage players from “dodging” certain players, through the use of third-party clients checking their history.

In November 2023,  Riot transitioned players from in-game Summoner names to Riot IDs, to unify all Riot titles.  With more changes coming every year, how players see each other may be different in 2025.
