Kojima Productions announced the Death Stranding movie in 2022, but what’s the movie going to be like?
Hideo Kojima makes no secret of his love of cinema. With a huge chunk of Metal Gear Solid’s story happening through cutscenes, this should come as no surprise to longtime fans. In addition to his cinematic stylings, Kojima often posts about movies he’s seen on Twitter before inevitably meeting with the stars of said film in some meetup.
Death Stranding is the most star-studded of his projects, featuring several established actors. For many, it was only a matter of time before Kojima felt the itch to make a movie. In 2022, the film adaptation of Death Stranding was announced, and a year later, A24 signed on to co-produce the movie.
Will Hideo Kojima direct the Death Stranding movie?
Hideo Kojima will not be directing the Death Stranding movie. Despite Kojima’s love of cinema, he still loves making video games even more.
“If I were to film and direct a movie, I would have to get out of the studio for about a year, and I can’t do that,” said Kojima at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.
Still, there’s no shortage of talented directors to work on Death Stranding, especially with A24’s connections. Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Ari Aster (Hereditary), Jordan Peele (Get Out), and Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) are some names that fans hope could work on the film.
Alex Garland is among the most popular choices, given his experience with character-driven sci-fi stories like Ex Machina and Annihilation. However, Garland stated he would take a break from directing and focus on screenwriter work in the industry. Meanwhile, Peele appeared alongside Kojima to reveal OD, a game that remains mysterious.
Regardless of who does end up directing Death Stranding, Kojima will certainly be over their shoulder.
When is the release date of the Death Stranding movie?
The Death Stranding movie is still in development and has no release date yet.
Despite its announcement in 2022, very few details are known about Kojima’s cinematic debut. While the presence of Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen is a certainty, Kojima has remained vague on what fans should expect.
However, he did emphasize his close involvement with the project. Kojima’s eye for detail and dedication to his artistic vision often result in unforgettable stories but may also hamper production. Metal Gear Solid V famously faced many development issues, with Kojima saying it was “too big to clear.”
Fans hope the Death Stranding movie doesn’t fall into the development hell of most video game adaptations.
