Hideo Kojima has provided an update on the development of Death Stranding 2 and Xbox-exclusive OD and unfortunately, the release dates aren’t shaping up to be what fans hoped.
Hideo Kojima remains one of gaming’s most iconic figures. Even long after his exit from the once-beloved Metal Gear Solid franchise, gamers can’t help but look to Kojima for the simple fact that whatever he does, it will be different. The upcoming games from Kojima Productions, Death Stranding 2 and OD, are no exception.
Death Stranding 2 is largely a mystery despite having a teaser trailer released in 2022. OD was revealed in a trailer at The Game Awards 2023, exciting and confusing fans. Kojima provided an update on the development of both games and unfortunately, both of them seem to be a ways off.
Is Death Stranding 2 coming out in 2024?
It is unlikely that Death Stranding 2 will be released in 2024.
In Kojima’s New Year’s Tweet, he states that 2024 will be “another year of simultaneous production of DS2 and OD,” which seemingly confirms that both games have a release date that falls beyond this year.
Death Stranding 2 was announced at The Game Awards 2022 with a teaser trailer that confirmed the return of a few key cast members and characters from the first game, but was vague regarding gameplay or development details.
Norman Reedus stated that he had “just started” doing work on Death Stranding 2 in May 2022, but it’s unclear how far along in development the game may have been before he was brought in. The first Death Stranding had a development time of three years and Death Stranding 2 could have a similar development cycle. If work on Death Stranding 2 didn’t begin until 2022, this would see it coming out in 2025 at the earliest. Neither PlayStation nor Kojima have given an official release date or window for Death Stranding 2, so fans shouldn’t be expecting it any time soon.
Is OD coming out in 2024?
OD is unlikely to come out in 2024, judging from Kojima’s statement.
OD will also seemingly be in development throughout 2024. OD has been in development for at least six years, according to Kojima in an interview with IGN. On top of this long development cycle, Kojima Productions has its attention split between several of Kojima’s pet projects, including a Death Stranding movie.
Kojima stated he will also start a web show entitled “HideTube,” as well as restart his “Hideo Kojima’s Radioverse” podcast in 2024. Kojima is a very busy man, and fans hope that all this work will be worth it once Death Stranding 2 and OD are released.
